So a few things about these ARM laptops:

1. They're some of the best office productivity machines for many users.
2. Don't expect to game on these
3. Media consumption is pretty great on these
4. Battery life is pretty great on these
5. There are some specific apps and drivers that may not work. Standard things are usually fine. Niche things are hit or miss. If you have VPN needs, confirm compatibility before you buy.

I have this laptop and I love it! I game on my desktop or Switch. No VPN problems for me, but some others have them. I even do a fair bit of development on it (VS Code for random things like Python, node, HTML, ML stuff, etc, and Visual Studio proper for .net stuff) when I'm on the road. It's a great laptop for me.
32gb ram for browsing and streaming? 🤣
Dr Wajahat with another gem!

If everything was seamless like Apple's ARM chips, this would be amazing. But until it's at that point -- passeroo
So better off with MacBook in general?

Would this be good for a college student? He has a good desktop gaming rig, so this would just be for school work

I mean it depends. It always depends. When I was in college I needed some oomph for heavier workloads like parametric/3D modeling, CAD, and the occasional rendering. Stuff that you couldn't get natively on Mac. If the most resource intensive stuff that they're gonna do is binge watch streaming services while on Word/Google Docs than this should be fine. The AMD Ryzen 7 8840U is a great "regular" APU laptop sold for $599 on Costco.com but is sold out. These APUs can actually game better than the Steam Deck (I have an OLED screen 7840U APU laptop). The newer generation Intel Core Ultra series of APUs are decent but AMD is better in the APU and battery life space. Battery life on ARM chips however beats both.

Thanks I appreciate the response. The "it depends" is where I get hung up. He's going to a school where you don't officially declare a major until after sophomore year, he was accepted into pre-engineering, so that's where he wants to land but the first two years are going to be mostly gen ed credits. We asked at the campus visit what they recommended and the advisor said some students use iPads with keyboards and some use laptops and others just use desktops in their dorm room or computer lab. They provide m365 apps, so that's covered and he does not want a Mac.

Yeah, computer labs have the required software and more. That's why they say students can get by with just iPads and keyboards. You can do a lot with a tablet actually but not quite everything yet. Personally, I will say that it's really nice having a machine that runs that software on the go. Very convenient.

Would this support a usb-c dock with two external monitors? Anyone know if Logi Options+ works with ARM for keyboard/mouse customization?

A lot of large enterprises have gone all in on the ARM Surface devices. Microsoft is committed to them. For productivity use cases, they're great.

Funny you say that, I specifically told our IT to stop staff from purchasing these specifically because our enterprise does not have the proper infrastructure to support them.

In fact, a lot of windows enterprise stuff just isn't supported. Not yet anyway.

If you have Unified (support) with MS, take advantage of it. Unless you have some legacy broke ass thick client line of business apps that are misbehaving, you should be in good shape. Could leverage avd or w365 in small corner cases. Good luck out there.

Excellent laptop for everything except gaming.
There's a few exceptions.

1. You can run Xbox game pass on this through the cloud service. I use it and it works great!
It has the same performance of a MacBook Pro M series. Both are ARM based.

2. You can install PlayStation remote play on here and play your games remotely.

Locally, the only games that can really run on this are simple ones through Microsoft App Store. Not all of them either.

Other than that, this thing excels at being a media device. You can watch all your streaming shows and movies with HDR across the beautiful OLED 120hz display. Even though it's not 4K, it's still sharp enough for a 14" screen that you wouldn't see the difference from a normal position.

Productivity is great! Anything to do with Microsoft office opens super fast!

Something to consider, this is Microsoft's attempt of running windows on ARM based machines. It will take time for it to mature and it will only get better.

The same thing happened with Apple when it released the MacBook M1. The OS worked great, however lots of apps were still playing catchup and general software experienced compatibility issues.

When playing 4k videos thru Plex, this laptop would require the Plex server to transcode correct because the screen can't display 4k native?

It's alluded in the previous comparison against Mac - what's the point of a Windows machine if you can't run any .exe files or plug and play any USB devices?

According to amazon, this laptop has lots issues and many returned (won't turn on after two weeks, crashing etc). The rating of 3.8 star and 17% reviews at 1 star, prevented me from jumping in, despite of all the positive specs.
