Available from:About this book:
  • This is the first book of the Red Rising Saga (6 book series).
  • Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
  • But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
  • Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

It's excellent, get it now! Fantastic series. I was at the end of one of them so I had to immediately purchase the next one, they're that good.

Book one is the weakest to me - too Hunger Games-y, but I heard the publisher made Pierce Brown focus on that tone to capitalize on Hunger Games' popularity. After that, they get amazingly good!

read the (first?) trilogy last year.. I read a lot of sci-fi, and these books f*ck. maybe prose isn't always greatest but holy crap it goes 0-60 in like 2 pages, hits 100 another 2 pages in, and keeps that pace up the entire trilogy.

Just bought this for a friend. Fantastic series, this and The Stormlight Archive have taken up a good amount of my time the last couple of years.

This book was so overrated in my opinion. If this was a woman protagonist every review would call her a "Mary Sue". The man character can do no wrong and is great at everything. It's basically Hunger Games but for bros
I think the term has evolved. I recall Wesley Crusher being called that. I don't consider it gender-specific.

Do no wrong? Did you read the books? He makes mistakes often and some lead to deaths of main characters. He learns from his mistakes. He is often outwitted by the multiple antagonists.
Not to mention he regularly ends up completely broken and near death. I suspect some of the problem is with the ease of healing. I love the series but it does reduce the sense of peril/stakes. It's the only way the universe works though. Without it you'd need an entire new cast every few chapters because everybody would be dead.
