I've read and heard the opposite frequently about them. Sucks you had the opposite experience. I got one of the 4000w inverters and it has been solid.

The one I got wasn't great either - 'eco' mode couldn't gracefully handle throttling up for various 'moderate' loads without the inverter output shutting off momentarily to avoid stalling the engine. 'Eco' had to be OFF to get a fridge to run on it - it was a little sluggish bringing the engine up to speed for other loads.
One real concern is the intake is on the bottom of the unit - they're known for sucking up sand/dirt and self-destructing. So, if you get one.. keep a piece of plywood handy so it's not just sitting on the bare ground.
I traded mine away in barter and have a Honda EU2200i now, which has none of the above issues (granted, it wasn't cheap either).

Thanks,. OP, but I would avoid these like the plague. I bought one of these refurbs that ran for less than an hour before dying, never to work again. Firman was less than useful. The only saving grace was that it came with an extended warranty, so I was able to get a refund.

So the general consensus is Firman doesn't really do any inspection on used / returned units and just ships them out again as refurbished?

Are returns at least easy / free if you catch issues in the beginning?

I got one (4000 W) that was scuffed up some on the outside, but the engine was clean and looked new. It had more done to it than just an inspection.
I used mine almost continually for 2-3 days without any problems. It only turned off when I needed to switch out the propane tanks.

I don't agree. At the minimum they test, clean them up, drain oil\gas and some might get broken eventually like new product would. I only noticed the issue with mine when loaded it to max for half hour, and the issue was easy to fix. At this price it is a steal if one has correct expectations.
It just that people who got units which are worse than expected tend to be more vocal about the issues.

It appears that the air intake port is located at the bottom of these machines [youtube.com]. As a result, the generator can ingest dirt and debris into the engine, leading to contamination in the piston chamber and fouling the oil. This issue will ultimately prevent the machine from starting.

I suspect this may be the primary reason these units were originally returned. IMO, having the air intake positioned at the bottom is a design flaw that potential buyers should be aware of. However, this problem could likely be mitigated by placing the generator on a raised platform, keeping it away from direct contact with the ground.

Heard air intake is at the BOTTOM of these units, which picks up debris like crazy.....

Dude, that's just what I posted. Hate to sound paranoid, but are you stalking me? Less than a minute after my post, you basically said the same thing—very odd. My Cheap Basterd sense is tingling.

Bought one a year or 2 ago. It's been fine. At $200 to have a little peace of mind, as this is only a backup to my main generator and solar battery bank.
It came with a warranty, IIRC.

Bought one of these last year and it was dead on arrival. It would not start at all, and the pull cable was very freyed. Only upside was when I contacted the seller they refunded my money and told me to keep the generator. I ended up selling it at a garage sale as non working for $20.

Note, the intake is at the bottom. So keep it on the hard surface while running
