Ilium was on my wishlist for years, waiting for the price to go on sale. Then I finally got tired of waiting and bought it at list price sometime last year. So, of course, since then it has dropped to $1.99 twice in 2025 alone...

Cool ideas (in theory) and good world building like hyperion, but man what a slog. Also some weird and very unnecessary Islamophobia eventually. Guess 9/11 did a number on Simmons since these came out not long after

Simmons has critique christianity, Whites, Conservatives and Liberals. His fav attack is probably Nazis but he's pretty much a fair attack type of writer.

The one thing that he wrote and the response was all too real(when it should have been fiction) which was nominated for a fewer awards for him early in his career when it was originally a novella. Was Flash Back.

The difference was that he had done the OG story as a Dystopia from the political party in charge to it's dystopian future. Which I think was Bush(But Reganomics used as a backdrop). The same people that liked that story hated it years later when he changed it into a novel and he was strong enough as a writer to risk doing a story from that political party in charge to a dystopian future. But that party was Leftest and Obama was in charge. and as one should expect by now. He was Cancelled and received several death threats etc.

Exactly a reason so many of us former leftests have gone to the middle. Which needs it's own party to break the stagnate ever stalemate.

Ilium is great. Olympos is very bad, I had to drop it halfway and after reading the summary of what I missed, I'm very glad I didn't stick with it. And Hyperion is my favorite book/series.

It is a book, he used a current time sentiment as a building block. Also I wouldn't call it "Islamophobia" any more than every second Hollywood action movie having as a villain a radical Muslim.

I enjoyed the books a lot. I think of his writing as "intelligent" SF. There are plenty of very interesting ideas and concepts coming together in interesting ways. It is very different from your standard space opera style SF where nothing conceptually interesting happens after maybe the initial setup.
