I've been using this enclosure for years with good results. Yes, It's limited to 10 Gbps. But it's significantly less expensive than a 20 or 40Gbps enclosure. I lost the tiny screw early so I hold it together with a rubber band.
BTW, it worked with an 8 TB SSD despite being listed as up to 4 TB.

Yeah idk why they chose a special screw such that they'd have to include the specific screwdriver. I just use a piece of tape

Yea it just doesn't matter, for hotter drives I use a real m.2 heatsink instead of the lid one and just use a zip tie lol.

The orico has a pretty decent heatsink lid in its price class but ts not the same as a full metal case or full m.2 heatsink for surface area.

Hows the thermal management on this? I change out the SSDs quite often does anyone know if the thermal pad last with repeated removal?

Its a standard thermal pad so when warm it comes off ok, sort of oily, but pads can break down or tear if you aren't careful or do it alot. Probably best to blast with heatgun/hair dryer before you try, and slide it off.

They do make one sided pads, my jeyi m.2 heatsink had a red pad on the bottom that had a fabric type side to prevent sticking but likely at the cost of performance. You might find them on sale somewhere, or just get a stack of regular pads, they probably cost next to nothing.

I just end up with a pile of the things like the screws because every m.2 drive and enclosure comes with spares.

I own one of these. It's decent but not great.

The entire thing, except for the heatsink and USB-C connector, is plastic. The SSD is held in place with rubber grommets, not a screw like most of these types of enclosures have. The moment you hold it in your hand and look inside, you can feel how cheaply made it is.

It does work, but I would not use it the way some have posted they are, constantly swapping drive modules in and out of it. If that's your intended use, you may want to look for something more robust.

Just bought to clone my stock 256 M2 and upgrade to a 1 TB.

Any current decent deals on a 1 TB M2 that you can recommend? Primary use for the computer is browsing.

I had two of these, don't remember exact model that kept overheating. Yes I know about installing the thermal pads correctly. I ended up trashing it and spending the $50 on the ASUS TUF Gaming A1 External M.2 NVMe SATA PCIe SSD Enclosure USB-C that cost much more but have worked flawlessly. I like ORICO for some products that have worked for many years, this didn't for a single day. YMMV?

Well its not that cheaply built for 10 dollars. I've seen worse. The thing with the gromet is that its just there to hold it down before the lid clamps down on it, so it doesn't have to be strong.

The alternative of screwing the m.2 down would mean that a stuck on lid due to old crusty thermal pad would be trouble. Could easily see users fracturing drives that way.

Well yea, but its 5x the price it better be good. The Orico is good for drives that don't get that hot, basically cheap qlc drives. High performance drives need a regular heatsink mod as stated above or entirely machined body to dissapate enough heat to not throttle under heavy workloads.

For the price of one Asus you can get 3 Oricos and 3 of these and still be under 50 after tax.

Simple design is best, I don't think even the asus will beat this cooling.

That got it working! Unfortunately only writes at 40Mb/s though Frown Tried an EVO and a MSI M482 2tb, same speeds with both. But at least it's working now. Debating sending back though due to speeds (was using USB-C to USB-C just to be sure). Read a review on there about theirs being slow as well and a replacement doing better, doing an exchange on it. We shall see!

Interesting because 40MB/s is usb 2.0, is it really a usb 3.0 port?

Some usb c charge cables are only usb 2.0, so use the short cable that comes with it and plug it directly to the machine to test, and or only use a good powered usb hub.

If the drives are dramless the write speeds can really suck over usb when nearly full, or when you sustain a write for an extended period, but the read speeds should still be faster than that.

Cheap $10 China AliExpress 256-NVMe on this, and I am getting 350mbps. The screw + screwdriver is moronic but still a good deal for $11.
