LOL that's not really correct... Premium stuff can have up to 50% more additives and a better, cleaner VM. Yes there are mainly 4 large additive companies (many more medium and smaller) but let's take the biggest of those 4, Lubrizol. They sell many different additive packages so just because many blenders buy from them doesn't mean they buy the same package.

The stuff sold at a price point (bargain basement) will meet API SP and dexos1 will have a treat rate of about 8.5% wt in the engine oil. Treat rate is the focus for products sold under a bid as the additive is sold by the ton, the less you use the cheaper the product. The more premium stuff will meet ACEA, MB 229, VW 501, etc. and have a treat rate of closer to 13%.

Now the clincher for me is that cheap additive package will pair with a cheap viscosity modifier (VM), the stuff that makes it a 0W-xx, usually some olefin copolymer (OCP). These are what I refer to as dirty polymers because they tend to leave more deposits as they break down (piston walls, skirts, rings, turbo bearings).

Those premium packages because they need to pass more stringent Euro specs will use a styrenic type polymer usually a star polymer which is a cleaner and more shear stable VM. This helps us keep the pistons cleaner = less scuffing, blow by, better power, better fuel economy, and these days more importantly a cleaner turbo as those are very hard on oil.

In the end the cheap stuff will not kill your engine, but much like living on ramen noodles and McDonalds it isn't going to make that engine stay at like new performance. I used to formulate this stuff before I retired so happy to answer questions.

You can use 0w-20 just fine. Heck same motor outside the US calls for up to 5w-30

Lower viscosity in the US is for CAFE reasons, not motor longevity.

FU slickdeals! I'm all about this and it did not show up on my FP. I would have noticed. Very targeted FP apparently.

Regardless in for more. Not even a member anymore but $3.50 non member charge still worth it.

Big Fan of Costco and Kirkland. Not sure I'll ever buy this oil again because the white vertical line that is supposed to tell you how much oil you've poured out does not work. So, there's no easy gauge as to how much you've poured or how much is left in the bottle.

If your vehicle takes 5 quarts it's not an issue…..unless you're just trying to add a quart between oil changes.

Happened with my sons car. It was down 2 quarts. Grab the gallon and start pouring. Think I've put somewhere between one and two quarts and go to the strip to check how much I've put in and can't tell anything at all.

Just know if you're buying there's a definite chance that the white strip gauge doesn't work.
Flashlights are your friend then.

I use m1 euro 0w-40 mb 229.5 for my '06 sprinter. My other car is a mid 2000s Honda fit. Any reason i shouldn't just use the same oil (for convenience) for the Honda (which i think calls for 5w20)?

Might grab the 12 1 Quart bottles. My car takes 5W-30 4.1 quarts (2011 Sentra) and filter is installed horizontal (no prefill). Could I get away with only 4 quarts used?

The taste will start to get a little rancid perhaps. But it would still be fine for cooking or in sauces

Thanks. Yes, someone else posted about a flashlight.
I had used one back then and still couldn't tell.

Tested with bottle again…inside with flashlight pointing down the pour spout and I could make out the level. Outside in sunlight I could not. Kind of a pain if your outside putting in a quart or two.

Was in warehouse since I posted and checked the bottles. Was very easy to see the level.

So, it's likely the ones I received were part of a bad plastic molding problem.

The same manufacturer for Walmart's in-store brand.
