Feels sketchy. Mixed reviews from reading Reddit posts and not BBB accredited.

Meh on the price...

Luckily, I had a fellow SD'er reach out over the weekend and we collaborated on an H&R Block purchase; driving down the price for both of us to reasonable levels and splitting the 5 Free File Options.

I will say, for all of your FreeTaxUSA fans...I decided, after doing my H&R Block Taxes to try FreeTaxUSA and at least see if the numbers matched H&R Block. I created a throwaway account on FreeTaxUSA's website and put in my numbers and low and behold, the numbers were the exact same across the board.

My taxes this year were a little bit beyond the simple tax return (W2, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R, 1099-B, including figuring out the exemption of US Treasury returns for State income tax purposes. Both programs figured out everything exact.

I will say, even the interview with FreeTaxUSA was very clear and concise.

Next year, I will still use H&R Block (as I prefer to have the software on MY computer vs. in the cloud or hosted on a website)...but you FreeTaxUSA lovers have got a good thing there and if anyone is looking for a simple Tax Prep solution on the cheap....FreeTaxUSA is a great alternative.

BBB accreditation should carry ZERO weight in any decision.
They are paid shills...just to get that BBB logo.

Reminds me of Al Sharpton and his shakedown tactics behind the Nation Action Network.

How does that work software sharing the download?? Aren't you allowed to install on one PC?? Please expound. Thanks.

FYI, HRBlock software still sends your tax info to their cloud to file. It's not truly offline. You can even pull up previous year's filing if you use their website because they have it saved.

I tried this using a CC number from Privacy and it got bounced twice saying it could only accept a bona fide credit card and not a debit or prepaid card. Not about to give them my actual CC information so no go.

mall.bighometax.com has a slightly low trust score. Why?

We checked mall.bighometax.com and we are unsure if the website is legit.

The review of mall.bighometax.com is somewhat low according to our computer algorithm. Scamadviser rates every website automatically by looking at where the server of the website is located, is an SSL certificate is used, who owns the domain name and other public and private sources.

Negative highlights
  • The website's owner is hiding his identity on WHOIS using a paid service
  • This website does not have many visitors
  • This website is being iframed by another website

When one purchases the software from a website...they are sent a link to download and install the software. With that download link the software can be downloaded multiple times as there are no restrictions (that I am aware of) in downloading. For all I know, there just a few different links, that are sent to many of the same users/buyers.

The software can be installed to multiple computers as it is not validated to the computer it's installed on. The validation comes when one transmits their Federal Tax Return to the IRS, through H&R Block. H&R Block software allows the product key (a 10 character code - ex. XXXXX-XXXXX) provided by the retailer when the purchase is made, to be used, up to five (5) times. That's why they advertise as a feature, "Five (5) free Federal Tax e-files". I'm guessing H&R Block uses the Product Key to manage those Five (5) e-files through their servers.

I hope that explains the "Federal" portion a bit... I'm going to reply to the other user about the State tax portion...

So, maybe great points...but I don't pay H&R Block to transmit my tax return to my State.

Instead, in true SlickDealer fashion, I use the print and mail option. My taxes are set up to where I will usually owe some tax...so I'll just mail my state a check w/my paper tax return. Speed is not a factor to me and thus, I don't use H&R Block to e-file my State income tax return.

Note: H&R Block cannot be used for TWO different state programs on the same computer. You would need to install a 2nd State program in a Virtual Machine or another computer. If if you uninstall the software and remove any mention of H&R Block from the Registry and associated directories, somehow the software knows if a State download was done on that computer (one could back up the registry and reinstall for a 2nd state but very few users would be comfortable in doing so...a Virtual Machine install would be faster, simpler).

Maybe the same thing happens when one e-files their Federal Return - I'm sure H&R Block has a back up copy of anything transmitted through their network to the IRS...but I just feel safer having the software installed on my computer vs inputting everything through a website...who knows, maybe it's a all a wash.

On a separate note, I'd like to believe that all data transmitted from the H&R Block software to the IRS (through H&R Block) is encrypted during transmission of that data...I'm now curious if any computer security folks have watched the data as it was transmitted to H&R Block was being properly encrypted.

Wouldn't accept my payment method. I'm not concerned about the fraud aspect as much as Chase / Visa are pretty bullet proof at this point assuming you monitor your transaction but this site just won't process payment.

It does go through block servers when e-filing federal. It is encrypted in transit and I believe IRS rules require Block to keep a copy for a certain period of time. It goes across in Modernized e-file Format (MeF), which is XML based. It shouldn't have every number that you put into various worksheets, just what is required for filing. So it's not as complete as someone getting everything that's in the software. If you really want to know more, this is the IRS page about it:

I held on because of your HOLD calls all over tax software posts. Eventually had to use FreeTaxUSA for the first time. I also compared my numbers to H&R Block online and they were within a few dollars apart. One drawback was lack of import of 1099s from different financial institutions. Thanks, I guess, JL5. 🤣
Anyways, out of curiosity, how does sharing H&R block software works? I understand sharing the Federal e-files but what about state? Do you print and sign those? What if you live in the same state?

When talking about sharing of the software across multiple computers, The download link can be used multiple times to download the software (the companies have to allow for this if they are not going to provide the physical software on a CD/DVD).

If the software is installed on different computers...any state program can be downloaded for "that computer".
The most simple way, albeit technical, to install multiple State Programs on to one computer would be to use a Virtual Machine (VM) (ex. Virtual Box, VMWare). A backup file of the Federal Return (which H&R Blocks creates) can be put on another computer (or VM)...so that the vast majority of the Federal data is incorporated into the State program.

I print, sign, and mail in my State Income Tax return (along w/a check for the tax I owe).

I eFile the Federal return (using one of the FIVE (5) Free Federal eFiles that comes w/the H&R Block software (using the Product Key you get when you purchase the product).

Here's a crazy example to the extreme.

Say there was FIVE friends on SlickDeals.. from 5 different states (that require tax filing).
They could each chip in and one of them would purchase the software.

All Five could use the same download link to download the H&R Block software to each of their computers. They would then also download their individual State portion of the H&R Block State tax software.

When each of them installs the initial software they would input the same product key that came with the purchase of the product (usually sent in an e-mail).

As long as each of the five friends only eFiled ONE (1) Federal Tax Return, using only ONE (1) use of the Product Key...everyone would be able to file separately.

Further, each could also complete their individual state return, print it...and mail it in to their state. (or they could pay H&R Block to eFile the State Return. (I'm not sure if H&R Block would pick up that the same Product Key was filing five different states (probably not, because at that point, the State Program is looking for payment for the State eFile (unless you live in NY State))).

Now, I've only summarized an extreme use for entertainment purposes only...I've ignored all legal and moral principals in my entertaining version...
