The Old API SN Formula is too high in Calcium & Detergent to be used in Direct Injection Engines and known to cause Low Speed Pre-Ignition.

The New API SP Formula is better suited for the Direct Injection Engines that are Euro Spec'd.

Isn't this Walmart's every day price?

Is that an every day deal or special promo?
No, the usual price is $75 for a 3-pack, which is the same as this deal.

But they go on sale several times a year. It's relatively easy to catch one of those deals eventually.

What are your experiences with buying the 5 quart jug from Amazon and how securely was it packaged in the shipping box? I am envisioning some leakage or punctures to the jug if insufficient packing/dunnage is used. But I have never purchased oil that was shipped either (I historically purchased liquids for in-store pickup from auto part stores)

I guess to be more accurate. It doesn't state whether or not the oil meets certain vehicle car oil specifications/standards. For instance, a lot of Volkswagen and Audi vehicles have specific oil specifications (VW 50X, where X is another number). Kirkland does not state they meet these standards (even though the viscosity grade might match the car's viscosity specifications). All they really state on the Costco site is that it meets the requirements for the following specifications:
API SP (An American standard)
ILSAC (Ford, GM, Chrysler, Japan)
Chrysler MS-6395
Ford WSS M2C946-B1, M2C946-A M2C929-A, M2C961-A
Ford WSS M2C961-A1
GM 4718M, 6094M
Not to state that maybe it does meet VW/Audi specifications, but if they did, they probably would have listed it since it would increase sales. My guess is that for most American and Japanese cars, it'll probably be fine. Probably Korea too. So really, it's just European cars. Even then, you probably could use it, but probably shouldn't risk it to save a few bucks since European cars are pretty expensive.

Dang it. I clicked this out of habit, thinking it was a decent price for good oil. Then immediately remembered that I don't need 0W40 anymore, because I sold my beloved BMW E46 last week.

This doesn't seem like a great price I bought 20 quarts of high-quality Kirkland motor oil (well reviewed on bitog) for $54 (and shipped to my door for free) from Costco. Yes, I understand not everyone has a Costco membership, but even pennzoil deals are better than this

What is the cheapest place to get the labor done after buying this oil?
Wally increased the labor recently so the total (our oil+their labor) comes pretty close to their Quaker State full Synthetic oil change !

API is a governance body for the automotive oil blends. SN to SP could be a large variety of variables.

For instance one blend change (I think it was to SN) removed an anti-wear additive that was known to spoil catalysts when engines failed.

I was in the room when GM pitched their case for the change. Since catalysts were warranted long after the engines fell out of warranty.

Here is what a quick google tells me about the API SP:

API SP replaces API SN as the latest standard for gasoline engine oil, introducing advancements in engine protection, particularly against Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear. API SP also includes improvements in high-temperature deposit protection and sludge control.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of the changes:

1. LSPI Protection:
LSPI (Low-Speed Pre-Ignition) is a phenomenon that can cause engine damage in modern gasoline engines, especially those with direct injection.
API SP oils are specifically formulated to mitigate LSPI, a problem that was not as rigorously addressed in API SN.
This is achieved through the use of a detergent system with lower calcium and higher magnesium, according to Infineum Insight.

2. Timing Chain Wear Protection:
API SP includes a chain wear test to ensure adequate protection for timing chains, which are crucial for engine operation.
This is particularly important for modern engines with direct injection and turbocharging systems.

3. Other Performance Enhancements:
API SP offers improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers.
It also includes more stringent sludge and varnish control.
API SP contributes to better fuel economy retention and overall engine durability.
It also enhances emission control system protection and protects engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

4. Backward Compatibility:
API SP is backward compatible with older API SN, SM, SL, and SJ categories.
This means you can use API SP oil in vehicles that require older API SN or SN Plus specifications.
Is SP good or bad?

It is the latest standard and it was design for "modern engines", but they will say it is backward compatible.

It won't harm your engine and as long as you're using a quality brand that won't skimp on additives, it should perform as expected.

That's the political answer, unfortunately. Without lab testing and monitoring in "older engines" it would be impossible to determine if the API SP is "Bad" or "Good".

These repeated changes were why the marine industry pivoted to a different engine oil formulation (FC-W) through the NMMA.

There is almost never a solid answer when it comes to oil performance without a monitoring program associated with that engine and the oil it is running.

My local garage charges me 15 bucks with my oil and filter. I trust them more than Wally
