We have moved to making our own dog food and mix with kibble. Most recipes call for a lot of rice or potato. I'm not sure if this is just a follow the leader sort of thing or if dogs really need that many carbs per meal. We supplement with veggies our dog will eat like green beans as well. Ground beef or turkey is the base. We then use a calorie calculator to get the calories per gram.

I got this the last time there was a SD on it. It's ok, but it has a LOT of rice in it.

It's because it's cheaper.

Dogs do need some grains, but they also only need so much protein as well. Typically they satisfy the micros through meat first, then fill the macros with grains and veggies.

Thanks..paid $16.91 for the pork. We use to use JFFD's fresh frozen version for a couple years but, once they expanded and became selling in pet store/etc, they started to have loads of rice in them, barely cooked rice at that!!! Still great deal and these will make for a good topper..

With tariffs driving food prices beyond what those on fixed incomes can manage and since this is "human food grade", its time to stock up for some.

I've bought the boxes from Costco (grain free) and it's a LOT of potato. It's too expensive for them to be filled with cheap carbs instead of meat.

76% water and nothing close to the nutrition needed. Don't use for anything other than a topper or your dog will starve.

Over 5 lbs of "Fresh" food vs dried, I can't imagine any company will put much meat per serving with a price less then $3 per lb. That said, this would be a great base to add a bit of ground turkey, chicken etc. to and save a lot of work.

Where do you get your recipes? I'm sure I can find some very easily but always like to hear where others find them since my search might not give the best results. My dog is really susceptible to skin allergies and beef and chicken aggravate them. Rice and sweet potatoes are cheap and easy to make in bulk and fresh salmon is on sale fairly often. I'd appreciate any links you or others have to recipes.

What a foolish thjng to say. Mosr food is grown and sold here. Why politicize a deal on dog food. He isnt thinking about you bro. Move on

Dogs and cats do not and should not have grains or simple carbs in their food. Ever.
A lot of 'grain free' dog food is misleading, has tapioca, potato, soy fillers, all harmful to their short gut metabolism.
FYI

Anyone looking to make their dog food should consider getting an Instantpot or whatever rapid pressure cooker may be on sale. Look on FB marketplace for cheap ones that are usually half the price. Ingredients should be varied to maximize nutritional value while minimizing overall cost. Personally, I never use white rice or potatoes as they will just turn to sugar once digested. Here is an essential ingredient list that will vary by week based on what I have on hand and what's on sale:
In order of greatest to least quantity:
  1. Pork loin or chicken breast (I can usually find these at $1.95 to $2.50 per lb either at Sams or local Mexican grocery store)
  2. Chicken hearts and/or gizzards (~$2 to $3/lb)
  3. Sweet potatoes
  4. Brown rice
  5. Apples
  6. Green beans or peas
  7. Carrots
  8. Celery
  9. Coconut oil (added after food is cooked)
Never add onions, garlic, salt, or any other seasonings. Add turmeric if your dog has arthritis or inflammation issues.
I have an 80lb female mastiff breed and use an 8-quart instantpot, which will be her dinner for the week. Once you get in the routine, it should take around an hour to prepare and less than 30 minutes to cook once pressurized. Hope this helps anyone looking to make the jump to healthier, cheaper homemade goodness. Your pup will love you even more for it – if that's doggedly possible.
