I purchased one of these on the last sale. It's a decent little machine, currently managing an HVAC interface for a multifamily building. Of course I wiped it straight out of the box, as I do with every computer - not just the supremely cheap computers. I have also purchased over 50 of the BeeLinks, a handful of the AceMagic laptops, etc. as well as Snapdragon machines, Surfaces and just about every flavor out there. Every. Single. Computer. gets wiped, all partitions removed and a fresh current version of Windows installed. If it's a computer I haven't used before, the first thing I do is put it into sysprep/audit mode and use powershell to export the drivers to a flash drive to make reinstallation a breeze. Honestly, everyone should adopt the practice. It takes 20 minutes to do and the tools are free from Microsoft.
It's "anti-China" to not want your hardware to be preloaded with malware by the vendor? I don't get it. We're not even talking your bog-standard practice of the laptop or smartphone vendor pre-loading the device with Facebook or McAfee Antivirus--we're talking actual malware. The kind that contain keystroke loggers.

Not quite. There are many other ways to hide a malicious instructions. Even with a fresh hard drive.
Just to name a few:
  • Compromised BIOS/BMC/preload system
  • Compromised drivers, since you export from what was shipped.
  • Compromised hardware
It's safer to use network-capable devices from trusted manufacturers. Avoiding Chinese companies can also help reduce security risks.

It doesn't come out to $20 more for me. The discounts are less.
Seeing the 16GB/512 version for only $14 more here on a business Amazon account. Price is $125 after $60 coupon.

Most people think it is just the software which can have malware.and incorrectly assiume they can reinstall software and avoid malware.
Many manufacturers have their pre-boot loader lased with instructiuons to download malware or ransom ware from an ip. That is the reason why these are banned in many countries.
Formatting HDD will not help as their firmware is laced with malware.

Show a single authentic source for this happening. The only thing I have found is a compromised partition on a HDD along with the OS partition itself. A complete clear (or replacement) of the SSD/HDD would eliminate this issue.

I challenge you to provide some form of evidence, in real world, not theoretical, of one of these manufacturers shipping custom firmware/bios with malware embedded and capable of reinstalling itself in the operating system after a complete wipe. I feel like a lot of people would be installing something like Linux on this anyway...which is even safer.

This would be very sophisticated, require $$$, and also some form of a way to constantly be maintained by the actors.

If you can provide some recent (as in last 10 years) evidence of this, we will all believe you. To me you just sound like an alarmist screaming theoreticals.

Here we go again with news from 2023 or early 2024 about a few bad ISO installs of windows that were found and fixed and never happened again.Good to see you guys "never forget" /s I hate the comments on SD
Yup. I bought an Acemagic Ryzen a YEAR ago and booted it to Kali right out of the box from Amazon. It was clean with no sign of anything. I'm so tired of this FUD from people who should stay in their little Reddit bubbles instead of infecting SD.

Help me understand how to redo the key / authorization in this process?

Please tell me a list of US-made computers that aren't made in China. I'll wait.

Generally engineers say nothing is ever wrong and everything is safe (generally). Security people say, everything is wrong (generally). In reality, threats exist and new ones come out everyday. If it is a computer, it can be hacked and usually easily.

Check out his nifty little thing: https://www.theverge.com/23321517...iew-defcon

Bottom line, a super cheap computer is fun but there are only two reasons it is super cheap. Extremely cheap labor and parts, and/or it is doing something else like stealing your data. Nothing is free.

Would like to get something like this to run Kodi but no HDMI 2.1 is a tough pill to swallow.

You can run kodi off a $20 Amazon fire stick…

I haven't looked super deep into the technical side of this. But I did hear people mention that the malware was in a hidden partition, to survive OS reinstall. So when you re installing the OS, remember to at least delete any and all partitions on the disk. There's a step in the windows installer that allows you to edit partitions.

From a command line after booting to a Windows ISO:

Diskpart
List disk
Select disk x
Clean
Exit

Proceed with Windows install.

Fire sticks are absolute trash running Kodi. Heck sometimes my Raspberry Pi 4 struggles with some video playback.

In this case, the (infected) copy of Windows that was installed alerted the user of the malware. So even if the hardware downloads malware it will get flagged by Defender.
