For those interested in shucking: inside it is custom sku Barracuda ST28000DM000 7200RPM CMR HAMR drive that is only found in this enclosure. Rated 2400 power on hrs per year, 120TB/yr workload rate, and 1 yr warranty. There is no long term information on reliability of these drives as they have just started shipping in March of this year.

Thanks for the post. That's good to know in case someone is considering this drive. Still kinda shocked it's only a 1 year warranty.

"I'd caution on Seagate drives at this time. I will not buy Seagate drives of any stripe right now. They have way too high of a failure rate. Seagate = Maxtor. Here's Backblaze's latest. All of those drives are Exo or Ironwolf too, not the lower end."

I'm planning on using drives like this as purely cold-storage archival backup. Plug in once a month, backup, store on a shelf. Also at LEAST 3 copies of everything precious (home movies). #1- The drive in my computer or NAS, #2- one cold storage backup on my shelf, #3- one cold storage backup offsite at my parents spot. I feel like this protects me pretty well.

I film a lot of family videos and action sports videos with a Action 5, an Osmo Pocket 3, and a insta360 x4. My storage needs have balooned in the last few years.

I agree, only use data center rated drives in your computer or NAS.

Exactly! I swore off Seagate drives years ago after a couple of premature failures while WD drives just keep on a tickin for me. Makes me wonder if they got sick of replacing drives and just limited it to 1 year now.

Same here. I've had multiple Seagate drives fail on me all within a short period of time and lost a lot of personal data. Since then, I've stayed away from Seagate and haven't had any failures with my WD drives. I will never trust Seagate with my personal data ever again.

I think I'm the opposite. I have never had a Seagate fail on me but countless WD .

I've had multiple Seagate drives fail on me, even when in cold storage. They just upped and decided to become unreadable when plugged in after a few months to a year.

From what I heard, you're better off with their enterprise drives. I've run a few exos from serverpartdeals for a while and never had a problem.

Hopefully this brings down the price of the larger easystores. My impression of Seagate is that they rush to get the biggest HDs out first and compromise quality.
