Libby's selection varies depending on your library. For the best selection, see if you're eligible to get a card at the main library in the largest city in your state. At the least you could probably get one at a neighboring town's library. Some big libraries will also let non-residents get a card for a fee which will probably be cheaper than paying Amazon every month.

This is a good tip. I live outside a larger metro area, and we get reciprocal library access. So I've got my local library card and three other cards.

To those who like using library ebooks, there's a Chrome extension called Library Extension [google.com] that lets you select and log into whatever libraries you choose, and then when you're looking at Kindle books on Amazon, it will show if your library/libraries have it and include a link to borrow or put it on hold. It lists this on the book's page just above the order button. This also pops up in Audible as well. It worked fine on my old computer, but I've found on my new laptop it goes away sometimes, and I just have to go into extensions and toggle if off and back on to get the list to come back.

Can anyone comment on how Kindle unlimited compares to using Libby? I've been using Libby but sometimes its seems like the available selection is fairly limited. I'm finishing a book roughly every 2 weeks if that's relevant

It may be due to your library's selection or maybe the books you're picking are ones less often at the library. I've found that I get many more books that I want from Libby than from Kindle unlimited when I tried it. The KU selection was not great, and anything good they had that I wanted to read, my Libby also had.

You may want to think of a handful of books you'd like to read, then check and see if they're on KU and if they're on your library's Libby. That'll give a pretty good indication. Or just go ahead and sign up for KU to try it, it's just .99. To me, it wasn't even worth that, but it's no biggie as long as you make sure to cancel before you get charged full price.

I'm also interested if anyone knows when this KU offer might expire? End of April (if I may hope)?
For those using Libby, I also use Hoopla through my library card. Hoopla often will have more inventory of popular books. I like the Libby app more (better search and summaries, better offline tracking, and general usability), but access to more books outweighs the Hoopla app issues.

The Library Extension is good. Libbysearch.com and deeplibby.com are alternatives that don't require you to be on book website to use. I use all 3.

Cool, those look good as well. I typically go to Amazon to read book reviews/add books to my wishlist so I can easily check when they go on sale, so the library extension is what I'll use more, but I just bookmarked libbysearch, too.

My experience is that Libby has more mainstream popular recent stuff than KU but you might need to wait in line. On the other hand some more obscure books are rarely on Libby and commonly free on KU. I only subscribed to KU at certain points in time when I was reading a series which was on it and for that it was worth it. Otherwise not so much. But as others said Libby varies a lot based on location. (I also switched to Hoopla which seems to have way more stuff at my library).

Also my understanding (which matches my experience too) is that for books to be available via KU, authors must agree to an exclusivity clause... so books available in KU won't be available in Libby and vice versa. (🫣 Cringing for backlash)
