Also, yes, pre filtering like you mentioned, with a less expensive filter is a good idea and I used to do it with a Brita. That's effectively what I'm doing now, pouring water into it with a TDS of 3-12, which is why I've gotten 1.5 years and still testing at 000.

What if you just keep using it like a pur or waterdrop water filter even past the recommended 006 TDS or if you pre-filter in a pur then dump into this?
My Pur has a pretty clear tipping point taste wise when it's not filtering like it should id imagine this is similar

I've been using this Zero Water dispenser for probably 15 years or more. I currently use it to bring the water I get from the vending machines down to zero TDS, and I'm on the same filter from 1.5 years ago. Don't go past 006, as I tried this years ago when I was filtering faucet water (filters ran out too quickly to continue), and I remember I was ok up to about 010-012, but somewhere in there I started getting flu like symptoms. I think bacteria builds up to unhealthy levels. A friend of mine experienced the same thing. Replace the filter around 006 and you're good.

It's hard to describe the exact taste, but it turned distinctly "metallic." We eventually traced the issue back to TDS meter—specifically, the metal pins weren't making proper contact with the electrodes immersed in the water line. For about a week, the TDS readings stayed flat and didn't change at all. Then that strange metallic taste started showing up, which really freaked us out.
