Filter life will depend on how dirty your local municipal water is. My filter last for around 8 months before the TDS meter reaches .006 which is when Zero Water recommended changing filters. For reference, my tap water only reads .028 straight from the sink. Zero Water is amazing, beats Brita hands down.

Is this better than the integrated refrigerator filters?

If you drink a lot of water, like I do, you may want a different solution. I have two of these exact pitchers and filling them up every day gets to be a pain.

I ended up opting for the 5 gallon jug solution and FWIW it's much more hands off. And instead of paying hundreds for filters, i'm paying 25cents per gallon. I'm possibly saving money now, but again, the major part for me is how hands off it is. It is convenient not to have to go to the water store once a month (I have 2 jugs), but pulling these in and out of the fridge every day gets old. Also they take up a ton of space.

If the filters were much cheaper, I may reconsider. But honestly, you're not saving much.
