hmm seems like a great deal compared to the i5-12600kf at microcenter for $140, with about 12% more performance according to userbenchmark? although i feel like i saw the microcenter one down to $120 for a bit

edit: j/k a quick search shows the 12600kf has been also cheaper in various places (amz, newegg, etc.), like $114-$125 or so.

About 5-10% faster (with lower power usage and temps) than the Intel core i7 12700kf that was recently on sale at Amazon for $155 and went FP.

As long as you can flash your BIOS and are not worried about the initial quality issues of the 13th and 14th gen, mainly the i7 and i9 line, anything over 65w.

Supposedly this has been addressed with a bios update and microcode patch.
There was also an issue of oxidation on early 13th (and 14th?) chip runs, also supposedly fixed.

I think it's been as low as 115 that I've seen for a short time at micro center

Yup, I got mine for about that much from MicroCenter. No regrets. QuickSync is great and if I'm actually running ECC memory on it (finding a compatible motherboard for ECC is almost impossible though) to run a really fantastic and grossly overpowered Plex server.

So how much life or upgrade cpu potential does the 1770 socket have from this i5 13600kf starting point. Not a gamer here just a 10 year upgrade cycle for my needs

Complete computer noob here. I have an 8 year old ASUS prebuild currently with an i5-6400. What is the chance I could easy just pop out the i5-6400 and replace with this? Not sure if a motherboard from 8 years is compadible with this
(Don't want to build a new computer, just want a new processor and a used gtx 1080 for better gaming performance on the cheap)

Your motherboard will not support this CPU, that machine is too old to be worth upgrading at this point.

if you mean this lga1700 socket, it's been the same for 12th, 13th, and 14th generation cpus, but 15th gen is looking like a socket switch. hope this helps!

userbenchmark puts it at ~11% faster, so, no, probably not! https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Com...vsm1700734

Most benchmarks I've seen comparing the two average around 15 sometimes 20 fps

While this CPU is showing a large improvement, I believe gaming would be better improved by a more powerful GPU than CPU. Your video card is usually the bottleneck.

Thanks! Have a 3080 paired with 12400 on 1440p monitor. I'll probably just keep it then
