These are the hairline scratches on mine. I was disappointed at first, but then I thought it was totally acceptable, since I'll likely bump the watch here and there myself and these kinds of marks would happen anyway.

You have to turn off the cellular chip or the battery will drain faster. And like the other guy said it seems like if you turn off the cellular trip the battery life still isnt quite as good.

Yes. The watch has its own eSIM number. So you'd need to sign up with your cell provider for a new plan.

To be clear, this is really only helpful if you want to use your watch independently of your phone. I.e. going for a run and stream music but leave your phone at home.

If you don't get a separate plan for your watch, everything works as long as your watch is within Bluetooth range of your phone (or potentially on the same wifi)

I'm looking for smart watches for my kids. One will have an iPhone soon. The other is a few years away from having a phone, but I want a watch that can call.

Can these work without a paired phone or an iPhone?

100% this. I just bought a Galaxy Watch Ultra, and I'm struggling to get rid of my Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Sure, it's a bit slower than my new one, but its battery life is insane. Galaxy Watch Ultra lasts me 1.5-2.5 days of battery, while my old Galaxy Watch 5 Pro regularly lasted me 2.5-5d. It's an insane difference. You'd think something titled "Ultra" and costing as much as it does would be the universally superior product.
My Garmin Forerunner 245 Music lasts like 5-7 days, and agree, battery life is most important feature.

I had the watch 7, battery was atrocious, got rid of it and bought this 5 Pro and it's great albeit a bit slower

I have a cheap Kospet (basically a generic Chinese brand) smartwatch. It looks pretty nice, more premium looking than this watch, has an OLED gorilla glass screen even and the battery lasts me around 2 weeks but the software isn't the best. Debating whether to get one of these.

I've been down a similar path as you. These aren't ideal without a paired phone.

I recommend a cheap/refurbished Apple watch for your kid who will get the iphone. Apple watch might be a good option for the younger one too, especially if your family is heavy in the Apple ecosystem. I believe Apple watches can be set up under a parent's account, but double check me on that.

If you don't get an apple watch for the one who is a few years away, I recommend talking to your cellular company, and/or looking into something like the Gabb Watch or the Gizmo Watch.

It's just a very popular product with the Vatican, so all the feedback is in Latin.

Looking up their recent feedback history, looks like they average ~5% unsatisfied customers, but are good about refunds.
If you request an exchange over a refund they will 'accept' then just refund you once the item is returned and tell you to kick rocks.
