- They are all volunteer, no one is FORCED into firefighting and no one is forced to do labor, they are all there voluntarily and there is a waitlist to join, its a PRIVILEGE to become an inmate firefighter, they aren't doing it because they love it, on the contrary, most hate it and are only doing it to commute or reduce a sentence and get some type of money in their books, majority of prisoners get very little money from friends and family (but theres usually a reason for this).
- They get rewarded through a small wage, a huge reduction in sentence and better time spent out there instead of fighting and doing drugs inside prisons with pretty much all you can eat BBQ, steaks, etc... which is quite the difference from prison food.
- They are ALL CONVICTED criminals, some convicted for very heinous crimes. Once you get from Level 4 (4 yard) to Level 2 off close-custody, you can go to fire camp, they will all have their sentences REDUCED in return for their service. Violent crimes are 70-80% until going to fire camp, non-violent can be anywhere to 0-50%.
- It is hard work, very strenuous and taxing. Some of the toughest jobs include wildland firefighting (hotshots) which inmates cannot do.
- Most people in California seem to be very confused about who to give credit to and who to feel sorry for due to the media constantly lying or removing details. Remember, EVERY SINGLE PERSON has been CONVICTED of a crime in these camps, most of them have victims and families they have impacted for the worse, some even permanently forever. A wildland firefighter and state firefighters who risked their lives without criminal convictions are the heroes who risk their lives and are not doing so to commute a sentence, always remember that before someone puts a spin on things to make you cheer for the wrong people.
If you want I can post about 100 audio clips from the entire fire and you tell me who and what to praise including all the looters, firefighters getting attacked, homes being robbed, people being robbed, copycat arsonists, on air screaming, mayday calls, firefighters trying to put out a blaze at gas stations while telling everyone to evacuate 2 blocks because an explosion is imminent and firefighter down calls. You guys literally have no thought of your own except how social media and what the media tells you how to think.Like any public job, very little work with more than enough pay.
And to those saying they risk their lives, yes and 99.999% no. They don't jump into burning fires and save everything and anything. Most of their job is down time.
We are thankful though, they do provide an essential services when needed.
Don't lump in all firefighters with the same paintbrush. There are federal forestry, state wildland and 'big-city'/structure, , paid-on-call, firefighter/paramedic, handcrews/suppression, hotshots / helitack / smokejumpers(not as common) / wildland firefighters, etc Big difference in seeing 'active' fires vs medical calls all day. Mostly down time? haha you really have no idea what you are talking about, if you're structural, you're doing mostly medical.
Tell your BS to the hard working wildland firefighters up in Dalton or Eldorado with the high injury and cancer (mesothelioma, esophageal, testicular, etc) rates -- spring to november.
This is straight from their MOU:
Overtime pay for all members and the patrol bonus for Police Officers are not included in your Final Average Salary.
You are credited with 40% of your Final Average Salary (FAS) at 20 years of service. For each additional year thereafter, you will earn 3% per year for years 21-25; 4% per year for years 26-30 and 5% per year for years 31-33. The maximum percentage of FAS payable is 90% at 33 years of service. (Any partial year of service credit shall be prorated to the last completed payroll period immediately prior to your retirement date.)
YOS Percentage YOS Percentage: 20 yrs = 40% 27 yrs = 63%, 21 yrs = 43% 28 yrs = 67%, 22 yrs = 46% 29 yrs = 71%, 23 yrs = 49% 30 yrs = 75%, 24 yrs = 52% 31 yrs = 80%, 25 yrs = 55% 32 yrs = 85%, 26 yrs = 59% 33 yrs = 90% maximum
