Synology is starting to lock features for [non-Synology HDDs](https://it.slashdot.org/story/25/...equirement).. I'd run away from their NAS units.

It's gonna push a lot of customers away, just especially the Slickdeals crowd who really doesn't like being abused by greedy corporations and generally would switch to another brand or build their own then play by those rules

Unacceptable that Synology is locking features. My 918+ will be my last Synology.

Some advanced features will be locked from hard drives that aren't synology approved. That is not the same as synology branded.

the article you linked is lying by failing to quote their reference article correctly.

What's the alternative? ugreen? Qnap?
I am looking for a NAS just for file storage and picture storage so I can move my cloud storage to my local NAS and have better control over folders/organization and not strictly rely on google or apple to just show me by date.

I wonder if this is a reasonable comparison to Synology 224+
https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-DXP...B0D22HBFK1

I have no idea if other brands will have similar support or reliability.

I am truly unsure what is the next best option. Synology successfully does so much out of the box that I don't know how easily another manufacturer could replicate their capabilities.

It might just be time for me to set up my own system with Unraid, get something with a beefy processor, and start playing around with homelab and other more serious hosting services (on my personal project roadmap).
