The ending of this game was a lazy waste of time, especially if you're a fan of the other installments in the series, but the 90% up to that point was quite good. As a huge fan of the series, I'd wait to get this at like $6ish

Its fine not to like the ending but calling it lazy is just wrong - they clearly built the game to lead up to ending. As a huge fan of the series going back 30 years I personally loved the ending - especially as someone old enough to have played it for 30 years.

yep this was a pretty big FU to the fans (and doubly so if curse was your favourite). i shouldn't have been surprised since the lead is still sort of bitter that installments that he wasn't involved in have been better received then the ones that he was.

its worth a run through at about $5, but after going through it man do i wish telltale could have kept going with it instead.

Nah. The developer is a bitter a-hole. Don't let nostalgia cloud your judgment.

I politely disagree. The ending was just a rehash of Monkey Island 2's ending and was both expected and disappointing. I also feel it's really unfair to your fans to ask them to genuinely engage with a narrative for hours on hours and then to rip the rug out at the last second and claim in your post-game interviews that it was part of your mid life crisis manifesto.

Imagine you launched a new Pokemon game and the first line was, "Welcome to the world of Pokemon. Did you know your parents will die someday? Here's your stupid Pikachu I guess."

We didn't enter that game to be reminded that life sucks actually and nothing is real or matters. We entered it for piratey nonsense.

Ron Gilbert specifically uses the cop-out "meta" ending way too much, to the point that I really don't feel it's worth engaging with his works genuinely at all anymore. maybe that works well for you? But not for me, for sure, and I think it's a controversial ending for very justifiable reasons.

I think it depends how you engage with it. If you care about Guybrush as a character it was a dick move of an ending, in some ways. But I really don't - he's a comical buffoon and we enjoy his hapless and increasingly improbable successes which only make sense if the deck is stacked in his favor.

Like most people who played it, I was 11-12 when I first played it and I'm 30 years older now. I really felt the passage of time and the game is kind of about that. The puzzle with the code wheels felt inevitable and beautiful and once were there the ending felt necessary, and I loved the little moment of quiet at the end.

I actually disliked the ending of MI2 way more than Return. It felt harsh (not to mention the difficulty spike) in a way Return didn't. But all opinions are valid here - I can simply say that the ending of Return worked for me.

It's his story, and he can do what he wants with it, but it is a little disappointing that 3 of his games have basically the same ending. MI2, Return and Thimbleweed Park all are basically the same at the end. They are fun games with good storytelling, but I agree that the endings are out of place, and would have wished for something nicer.
