3/16 is the typical pilot hole for a #12 wood screw.
Should also be noted this bit is a foot long, not typically a length that would get used for a pilot hole.
Installers will drill a hole right against the baseboard, then push a red wire down the hole into the basement.
Then once you find the wire in the basement, you have your location to drill a larger hole inside the wall cavity itself.
Of course, you can do it on the corner of the ceiling, and fish down from the attic too.
