I finally got around to beating this game last year. Its the only full release Far Cry game not in the main series. (I believe Blood dragon was technically a FC3 mod.)
Id say overall it got a bad rep. One thing you'll notice immediately is how pretty the game is and how full of the life the forests and jungles are. There was a lot of time Id just chill and wander around exploring and hunting because the game just "breathes". Its very relaxing.
I absolutely adore the pets and mounts. You get really attached to all the partners you pick up. Some of them are super hilarious. They are programed really well to have attitudes and not follow you around like robots.
I also really enjoyed the difficulty. Only having access to Bows as the best weapon in the game forced you to strategize.
Using resources to help build your settlement is awesome.
My only complaint is that its relatively short for a modern Far Cry game. There's only really 2 enemy territories vs the normal 3-5 so you can knock out the whole game iin a couple days, I think it took me a week of very casual play.
Its like an 8/10 ignore reviews. They were really harsh on it.

Thanks for the detailed review! Very helpful. I love the Far Cry series and between that and your notes I'm sure I'll get $10 of enjoyment out of it (I bought the Apex Edition for $8.74).
I feel like I'm the only one here who thought this game was awful. Far Cry 4 and 5 were superb and I feel like this was absolute junk built off the back of the better ones.
This is actually one of the best Farcry games. It IS different than your typical entry in the series but the gameplay and setup are good. It's a great change of pace while staying in the genre.
A lot of the hate for this game, from what I remember, is using the exact copy/layout of the FC4 map but changing the environment models to be primordial. Kinda lazy.

As an added bonus, Ubisoft recently enabled steam achievements on this game (and many other titles).
