I'd wait for Black Friday and maybe get the 85 inch Bravia 7 for $1600-1800 if it follows the X93L pricing.
If you need one now, there are other 85 inch mini LED TVs available for around this price point: TCL Qm7 ($1500) Hisense U8N ($1700) & Samsung QN90D ($1999). Absolutely worth spending a little extra or waiting for price cuts on Mini LED.

They're all better than X90L due to modern mini LED.
Even the cheapest one, the TCL qm7 85 inch at $1k is better š

The U7 still holds its own against the X90L at 2/3 the price.

the RTINGs link you posed is for the 85" Hisense U7 which is indeed $1,299 so $200 less and is more of a fair comparison to the X90L but from everything I have read is the motion from the XR processor in the Sony will help with things like sports over the U7
What should be said is: If you're in the market for an 85" and if this fits your price range, buy it now.
Waiting now there is no certainty that "BF" deal will exist with the current economic battle that we will absolutely lose. (15% of exports from China to US - they can hold off as long as they want to and win. The other 85% exports to other countries, so they don't need the US to stay a float)
Maybe in 2027 the Bravia 9 will be near this price.

To fix the motion of the Hisense/TCL, it is widely recommended to use an Apple TV 4k or similar device, and that makes these TVs even more competitive against Sony. I'll be doing the same with my 83" LG OLED.

The Sony has better motion, better warranty, better upscaling, much better color calibration out of the box (not that you cannot calibrate the U7 to be closer). Better long term support for updates.
The U7 has Mini LED, maybe a touch more brightness. I also want to point out that if you buy a Apple TV 4K to help the Hisense that's another $125 you need to add to its price which brings the price almost the same.
I agree they are close but adding an Apple TV to the U7 makes the price almost equal and there are better things about the Sony so I would say it isnt a better TV more on an equal TV.
