Looking for a basic machine for my mother-in-law that will do web browsing, email and word processing without frustrating her. Would something like this do the trick?

When you add a screen, keyboard and mouse, I think a laptop would be better. More so since laptops can be moved around. I haven't shopped for a laptop recently, so I could be off about the pricing though.

I've thought about that but she doesn't need it to be mobile and already has a mouse and keyboard. I'd just need to find a cheap ($100) monitor and she'd be golden.

Got this a few days ago and the CPU power bios settings were screwed up. For some reason C-states were disabled.

Got the 1TB/16GB version last month and am now running it as an Odoo demo server running on Ubuntu. Works like a charm.

If she doesn't need the machine to be easily portable (like a laptop) this machine is a lot of bang for the buck. When you first turn it on it boots right into Windows 11. You'll need to add the keyboard, monitor(s), and mouse.

Jeff Geerling has a few videos about this box. One came out today.

Drives overheat, cpu overheats, and it has problems with many SSD's. Dramless drives drove up the cpu demand to intolerable levels and drives with a cache gave him different problems with the device identifying them properly. He ended up de-casing it for airflow and wrapping it with tape to keep the drives in.

Failed a number of his NAS tests until he fully declocked the cpu and had a fan blowing on the drives. At that point, the performance was poorer than a raspberry pi 4.

This is not the same sku that he used. This doesn't have 4 nvme capacity. These are just tiny pcs, with 2 drive slots. They work well enough as a main board for a DIY nas, which is what I used mine for. This sku is much smaller than the 4 bay version.

This is the project/files

Dell refurbished monitors from outlet.us.dell.com.

They're cheap working class monitors that last forever. I have six now all over 10 years old.

Can it fulfill the need for a plex server and immich NAS with additional storage ? Was using a pi earlier but that's throttling like crazy once data started to increase.

Unless you can find a used monitor or able to get a TV to work with it. I just use my Mac Mini with my OLED TV and my used PC with a larger monitor I got on marketplace with a wiped tower for $100.

What's the point of this? Is it because it's small and cheap? Just wondering the benefits of having one.

I just replaced an old Win10 tower for retired inlaws with the 12GB version of one of these things and it works great for inlaw kinds of things. Absolutely adorable. No regrets.
