I love that this is a post, but also need to temper expectations. I live in Downtown Orlando and actually was able to go car free (by choice) for a few years thanks to LYNX. That said, LYNX serves 3 counties that, combined, are equal to the size of Delaware and our region doesn't invest in transit to the point where LYNX is set up for success. The further out you go from the city center, the less frequency and runs you have.
If on vacation, your time is important and you should consider a few things:
  • Travelling with a family? That $2 per person adds up and rideshare or taxi becomes not much more costly for door-to-door service
  • LYNX used to have a real-time bus tracker, they are working to get it again, but right now they don't. So you'll have to wait at a stop not sure if the bus is running late or if you already missed it.
  • Check the schedules and also check the stop/dropoff locations relative to the name. Properties like Disney are huge, and you may or may not be where you want to be. For instance the Florida Mall, you'll be walking through a giant parking lot to get to the actual mall.
Orlando is slowly getting there, but we're not really there yet if you don't live in Downtown (or, more recently, along the commuter rail line). We're a victim of our built environment, which is largely sprawl as you get further out. I love going to big cities and not using a car.
If visiting Orlando, I recommend staying at a hotel that offers a shuttle to wherever you are trying to go and then using a rideshare for a one-off trip or two. OR, plan for a few days to be your theme park days without a car rental (why rent a car just to pay to park it?) and then spend the other days with a car rental and do your hopping around then. That's how we usually do San Francisco/wine country.
