note, mac's will not get 20gbps with this, only 10gbps. check 1 star reviews too.
probably because the machine does not support the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. My windows laptop has a USB4 (40 gbps) port but without USB3.2 Gen 2x2 support so this device will also only get 10gbps (USB3.2 Gen 2x1) on mine. You have to verify your machine's USB port specs to make sure you can maximize the throughput of this device.

At this price you might as well just get the thunderbolt 4 wavlink deal for $60

I just grabbed one to put this cheap yottamaster Y7000 Pro 4tb gen 4 7000/6500 SSD I grabbed for $269 on newegg. Should be a nice little external drive to take with me on the go or even at home it should be plenty fast enough for even gaming.

Just store? Get the $11 orico 10Gbps. Play off of? Get 40Gbps with a fan, assuming you have a port that supports it.

I've been tracking these prices, 10Gbps will hover around $10-12, 20Gbps ~$30, 40Gbps ~$50-60. Tend to think you actively use it get the 40Gbps with fan, otherwise the cheapest 10Gbps.

Any NVMe SSD enclosures that can connect to a motherboard via SATA to use as a drive to keep the OS drive cloned to it?

No, but you can get Nvme to PCIE card if it's for a desktop.

Is this product essentially to add storage to a laptop, and/or for desktops that have no internal mounting or space options?

Don't forget an appropriate cable that supports the interface speed. Most USB-C cables are either for charging only or 10gb/s at best.

Late model Intel Macs will get 20 Gbps.

Apple cheaped out with M1 on up.
