I had the same question. At least Wirecutter prefers the Baratza Encore.

We tested the Breville Smart Grinder Pro, intrigued by its encyclopedic list of options and features. But the abundance of settings (timed dosing down to 0.2-second increments, and nearly 60 grind sizes) and complicated digital interface made this grinder difficult to use. It took forever for us to dial in. And perhaps more importantly, our tests produced over-extracted batches each time, which means there are likely too many small particles in the results.

Encore ESP for sure if it goes back on sale at $160. Or the base Encore if you're sure you'll never try espresso.

I chose this over the encore mainly for the convenience.

I got lazy over time with storing the beans in an airtight container and precisely measuring the grind weight for my pour over. On my breville I store my beans in the hoper and it has a grind time feature. Since I make the same amount of coffee every morning I have it set to 12.3 seconds which gets me pretty close to the same ground weight I need. I can adjust the shot size to accommodate different grind times

It solves my problem where I can't think in the morning w/o coffee but I need to think to make coffee.

for this grinder, how much residual is left and do you need to tap the sides to get the residual out?

This looks wayyy more complicated than it should be. I have a Fellow Ode Grinder and while it can't grind fine enough for espresso (Fellow Opus can), there is a single dial on it that goes from fine to coarse.

It's really quite simple; the side dial is grind size, the left and middle buttons just change how long it runs. If you only have 1 use for it, you can set it and forget it and just push the on-button.

I've had mine since last fall and it's been working very well. edit: oh yeah it was $200 back then, so this is a decent discount.

All those settings and it measures by time instead of weight.

I have this grinder and love the versatility, and I especially love the doser that fills the porta filter with just a tap of the button behind it, I would never buy a grinder without this feature.

You can find these at TJ Maxx/Marshalls for $130 but you might need to go to a few stores. It's a lot easier to find there then a Barista Pro. I guess $160 is decent for not having to go to the store.

I was lucky to get this from TJ Maxx for only $99. The grind is really good although my only gripe is that the container sometimes doesn't fit well directly to the grinder and there's some grounds outside the container

One complaint after using this for years is that it spills a lot off the edges; and there's no Breville or third-party compatible funnel to narrow the grinds straight down to the portafilter (even though they're made for other grinders). Super frustrating because it would be so easy to fix.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I've had a Baratza Encore for a couple of years now and it has been underwhelming for my purpose (daily pour-overs). The grind is very inconsistent and produces tons of fines as well as large chunks of beans. It's super loud and takes around 2 minutes to grind 64g of coffee, which is about what I could do with my old Hario hand grinder. Everyone tells me I should upgrade the burr, but I think I'm ready to move on and just try a new grinder.
