Wool > Shift > Dust but all are enjoyable tales. Wool is near the top of my fave sci-fi novels. I don't like Amazon's new download policy, but for $4 you're getting a lot of goodness here.
Silo is a super good show

Make sure you check library if they use Libby as well - many local libraries will let you borrow the eBook and Audiobook for free!

Competition is good, although if your concern with Amazon is due to their anti-DRM stance, I regret to inform you that no one has yet cracked Apple Books's DRM scheme, either, so for all intents and purposes you're just locked to a different ecosystem.

Kind of a sad state of affairs, given that Apple had previously championed DRM-free mp3s during iTunes' heyday.

What's the new policy?

Amazon has removed the ability for Kindle users to download books to their computers for offline use. This change affects both purchased books and library loans, and means users can no longer transfer books to other devices or convert them to other formats. Instead, Kindle books will only be accessible through Amazon's cloud service and Kindle devices.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

No more Download & Transfer via USB:

The option to download books to your computer and transfer them to your Kindle via USB is no longer available.

Reduced Flexibility:

This means users can no longer convert Kindle books to other formats like EPUB or PDF, or use them on non-Kindle e-readers.

Cloud-Based Access:

Kindle books will now only be available through Amazon's cloud and will sync across all compatible devices.

Impact on Backups:

Users who rely on downloading books for backups will need to find alternative methods, such as storing books in the cloud or using third-party apps.

Why the change?

Amazon has cited reasons including stricter DRM enforcement, a desire to keep users within their ecosystem, and the phasing out of older formats.

"Send to Kindle" still works:

The "send to Kindle" feature, which allows users to send books to their devices directly from other platforms like Libby, is still available.

My issue with Amazon is they now have a track record of removing the ability to download items from your digital vault. This has been a thing since Feb 2025 of this year.

Apple has no such track record.
