Upon checking with customer support online, this does require 60 days of uninterrupted service to get unlocked. Also for someone who already has a line active, adding a new line can get the $60 plan for $40 or lower (with auto pay).

Also. embracing for the time machine jokes, I still think 16e 128gb at $299 for the phone, was a better deal and might come back - far superior processor, 8gb ram, Apple AI support, longer os update support, convenient usb-c port instead of lightning etc. These far outweigh the potential advantages from 14 plus - 256gb, dual camera, magsafe, larger screen size etc for me.
Not true for everyone/every use case, agreed. YMMV
Is this something where you can get the device, pay a month, and then bail? And if so, could the phone be unlocked? (Sorry, if this is an ignorant question, I'm a noob.)
Yeah, the policy changes since April 1st has caused a lot of confusion. I purchased the 16e precisely on April 1 and despite the policy changes being published after I bought and they are not the same for Verizon prepaid as for mnvos, I am still going to recharge another month for my 16e, given it will need me to pay ($60 - $25 monthly discount on 16e deal - $10 from auto pay = $25) only. If I don't pay for the 2nd month and Verizon refuses to unlock in lack of 60 days of service, then worst case, I will have to pay for another consecutive 60 days at a much higher rate since I will loose the $25 discount. So, for $25+tax more, I am willing to pay to avoid any such risk.
YMMV

Interesting. Tax/fees for me was only $25.xx. The itemized listed the State tax and the emergency services fee.
Did you have to activate a new or request a new number from them?

First Gen Apple AI is terrible, drains battery, overheating . Plus the cloud AI works on all non AI devices. There is no FOMO
Just like 1st Gen 4G, 5G, 4k camera .
It takes a good 4 years for new tech to mature
A14 to A16 with 6GB/8GB and 128-256gb is fine for power users the next few years
This deal is like $200 2025 iPhone SE and iPad 9, you aren't getting the latest n greatest cuz 90% of people don't need it unless its a major release like Apple M1 MBA, Bionic chip every 4 years 100% boost. You don't need every buggy update, just a few stable ones that don't slow down your device making you buy a new one every other year.

So, has the unlocking rules changed ? Does it require 60 days of paid service?

Probably want to ask Verizon customer support about "losing" the airtime. I am inferring that what you want to do is use the value of the prepaid plan month toward the cost of a future month of service on your Verizon postpaid plan by the question you asked, and I don't think that's possible. But all you'd lose by asking someone who can give you an official answer is the time it takes to ask a Verizon customer support rep that question.
In my experience with Verizon, this will absolutely be a no-go. But even if you consider the money spent that is "lost", it's still a good deal for the phone.

Can you use the Verizon iphone on Tmobile network?
Once it's carrier-unlocked, I don't see why not.

I also just noticed that Verizon is saying my next bill is due for this line on the 15th of this month, even though I ordered it on 4/28/25 and it was received 5/1/25 -- so they want me to pay the next bill 14 days after the first one Stick Out Tongue wild -- Tried contacting customer support, they kept transferring me around and around -- They also took the $18 credit I had on my account and even after emailing them a screenshot of it being on my account a few days ago, they said they'll have to get back to me on it -- I personally moved over to Google Fi with that phone/watch promo from a pre-paid, my wife is on a postpaid plan with Verizon and will be moving over to Mint as soon as this phone unlocks as her postpaid plan renews roughly around then. I've personally had nothing but nightmare-inducing experiences with their customer support. The service where I'm at is terrible (5G I get about 32Mbps, with Google-Fi (T-Mobile) I'm getting 600+ Mbps and at times over 1000Mbps). They've lost about 300k customers as of late, adding two more to that count soon enough.

Does the phone need to have a Verizon eSIM active on it for the device to unlock after 60 days? I'm considering activating the line on this iPhone, using it for about a week, and then transferring the eSIM to my primary phone. Will the original device still get unlocked after the 60-day period? The CSR I spoke with wasn't very helpful. Any insights?

Don't know about now, but I did a couple of iPhones from Black Friday 2023 sales. They were on Total Wireless (verizon mvno). They unlocked after 60 days even though the service had expired after the initial 30 days.
