What is the different between GLL100-40G vs GLL100-GX (Amazon has it for $203) and I wonder if there is any hidden features. I couldn't find the different between the two.

This is a great laser, but, as with any other lasers, the quoted range is for the perfect conditions (read pitch black). In a well lit environment, it's a much shorter effective distance and the line will be too faint to see at 100 ft. In any case, this green laser is worth it if you're doing a major reno.

There's zero need to buy brand name for something like this. The $40 ones on Amazon work great and often have more functionality

You know what, I'd say yes kinda you do. There's no way you'd be able to get the horizontal level up or down without it being mounted on a tripod because at a certain angle if you just lean it against something it'll just fall over. For me this green light is a huge difference between the much dimmer red light lasers. This is the reason they cost more, not sure why but green is much pricer. I didn't have a good experience using it even with a good tripod however. For whatever reason it was always about two seconds on, two seconds off, and it would never be a constant beam. I charged it to 100%, multiple on/off cycles but could never get it to just stay on without blinking. Also, if I moved the trip up or down to move the beam, the level would have to be tapped to keep its level. It wasn't smooth. So I returned it. Instructions were 100% only about how dangerous looking directly at the beam in different languages is so if anyone has any idea what I was doing wrong let me know. I'm pretty savvy with tools but I couldn't figure this one out.
