Best technique I've found is to brace the pallet, square up a heavy block on the target board, then give it a good, square whack with a hand sledge. Still mixed results but better than splintering the whole thing piece-by-piece.
As to this gadget, I just use water pump pliers. They've always worked.

The key is the leverage, the pivot point is right at the grabber. Much more efficient that hammers or pry bars.
If I pull a board with a big pry bar, I hit the sharp end of the nail a couple times with a hammer just to expose the head, then use this tool to pull the nail from the other side.
One of my rules around the farm is remove/trash the nails as soon as they are exposed. This prevents stepping on a board with exposed nails or expensive barn calls for the horses.
This tool grips the nail and pulls it easily without flinging it across the pasture.
