This is synthetic oil, but yes, not worth the bread-crumbs they are offering
The price of crude oil is the lowest it's been in 5 years. So why is this rebate so stingy?
I won an extra $5 playing the game so I get $10 back.

Sorry, but this is a lame offer.
Mobil 1 at Walmart is currently on sale for $3 off, around $25/5 qts. This rebate brings it down to $20. Last month I purchased Costco's Kirkland oil on sale for $13/5 qts. (I ordered a total of 30 qts.) While I prefer Mobil 1, $5 off isn't worth the chore of applying for the rebate, waiting 4-6 weeks for the rebate card, remembering to use the dumb rebate card, etc.
Much better when they offered $10/$15 rebate cards. I'll pass.

how is the kirkland synthetic compared to M1? any idea which company produces the oil for kirkland?

Kirkland Signature motor oil for Costco is manufactured by Warren Distribution, Inc. They also produce store-brand oils for Walmart (Supertech) and Amazon (Amazon Basics).

Thanks for the info. Are they as good as M1?

I think the critical point is the oil change interval. Without going into the politics, if you change it around 5K, any synthetic oil is good.If your car manufacturer requires certification then a lot of synthetics have those codes listed on the box and you are fine picking up any of those.

I recently changed the valve cover gasket on our extended family's Sienna at 198K miles and found no varnish. The van has been religiously following oil change around 5500 miles only with Synthetics since purchased between pennzoil, Costco, Castrol & Mobil1, which ever is cheaper. Most of the times its been Pennzoil (due to rebates) & Kirkland 5W30

Kirkland oil is great. It's manufactured by Warren Distribution (now Highline-Warren), which manufactures oil for more than 40 private labels including Amazon, Kirkland, and Mag 1. Last time I ordered it online, it was shipped to me directly from Warren Distribution.
Project Farm tested Kirkland oil (search on YouTube), and his take is that it's "very good."
I alternate between Mobil 1 and Kirkland. But this rebate is ridiculous.

Just missed the Costco's Kirkland brand oil deal, 4x 5qt jugs for $54. That was a heck of a deal but unfortunately was waiting for my Chase CSP card to show up and that deal ended before the "expiration" date.

Crude oil prices do not track with motor oil and other lubricants.

People often say dumb statements like X brand is better than Mobil…. You guys do realize that Mobil makes different products right? For example, yes most synthetic oils will protect the same as the standard Mobil 1. The standard Mobil 1 and those oils carry the standard API rating, which isn't bad, but they don't carry the higher performance standards. So find the cheapest one and change the oil every 5k or less. Now, where the true value comes from is the Mobil top tier oils like Mobil 1 ESP line, euro oils and the extended performance to an extent. These oils are Mobil's best oils and will have much better protection than your Kirklands or store brand oils. They are made with more PAO and GTL and only cost a few dollars more per 5 quarts. These top tier oils also carry the higher manufacturer standards.

Yell it louder for those in back. worship

M1 ESP is inarguably one of the best off-the-shelf oils one can buy.

Costco has their 2 5 quart cases on sale every few months. It's usually a dollar cheaper if you buy in store.

Just keep an eye out or adds DEAL ALERT here on Slick deals to get notified when it comes back

More data on oil viscosity. I use 5W30 in S Cal for all cars. BTW, the switch to 0W40 will prevent premature engine failure during the warranty period. KEY POINTS: 1. Lower viscosity oil helps increase fuel mileage. 2. Higher viscosity oil reduces engine wear.
You are oversimplifying it. GM is fixing a problem with a specific family of engines.

He literally says just because you're increasing the viscosity, it doesn't mean you're getting better protection.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p...Kw&t=1005s

@18:17: "That doesn't mean you shouldn't go out use a thicker viscosity oil in your engine, BLINDLY"

I've actually done a similar testing process to what is written in the info box. My car runs 0w020, so early on I submitted multiple sample sets to two different companies (Blackstone & Amsoil/Horizon).
The results for MY engine and MY normal driving habits (SoCal, 80hwy/20city, 2 HPDE events/year) show that I can go UP TO 7,000miles between changes. WFH means that I can easily do 2year oil changes, but I have a habit of 6 month changes from my previous car. Moving up to 5w-30 would not save me any money on oil changes, M1 0w-20 ESP X2, 5w-30 ESP and 0w-40Euro costs exactly the same.

When I did change to 5w-30 for a while, wear metals actually went up. Both companies noted bearing wear and recommended I go back to the previous oil (OEM Castrol). Remember that tighter tolerances in newer engines (and the number of teeth in your oil pump) means that thicker oil may not be able to produce the necessary film needed to protect parts like crankshaft bearings. He mentions this in previous videos. Toothpaste will be harder to get into narrow opening vs water.

tldr: Don't change it based on what some internet rando (including me) says. Do the testing to see if you are doing more harm than good.
