I had one of the models before this and you do need a boundary wire. If the wire isn't connected to the base it won't run.

You install the wire 10in from the edge I think. The better job you do the closer it cuts to the edge. Pretty much pull the wire then hammer a stake and repeat. You can also get a camera that does help it avoid obstacles.

I have since moved onto a gps robot mower, because it became a little too inconsistent and the bouncing made it miss spots. However for this price it's not too bad to randomly have to clean up a few spots.

It does go back to the base and recharge automatically by following the wire around the edge.
The shit hits the fan
That would work, but it works best with an intelligent wire

So far it has been a interesting project. Had to reroute my landroid away from a small ditch so it wouldn't get stuck. But kinda cool

Review after 1 month. Kinda ok. The perimeter wire is a bit of a hassle. Although, 3 out of the 4 sides of my fenced in yard have no issues with it, but one side it has cut the wire multiple times. I think I made the mistake of not trimming the grass down in that area before installing the wire, so it was floating on the grass a bit rather than right on the dirt. I'm curious about the similarly priced ones on Amazon that don't use a perimeter wire as that probably would have fit my use-case better. It does need the wire - I tried every trick to make it not including having the loop be around the base and it "outside the loop" and it does not like that as it looks for the signal wire on both sides. It also requires the wire to follow back to the charging base.

I'm hoping that once I have the 4th side wire "correct", then I'll be happier with this one as it definitely seems like it could be a "set-it-and-forget-it" item, once the set up is done.
