If you want cellular, this is a decent price. If you don't, it is not at all. The non-cellular version of this was $199 nearly a year ago. This is loads better than an SE 1 (since it is 2 years newer), but I expect an SE 3 with larger screen come August/September.

Again, if you don't want cellular, there are better options from time to time.
How much is the non cellular version?

As a general rule for standard MSRP, the SE models are $50 more for cellular and the non-SE models are $100 more. That gap usually holds up on sale prices, too. It helps assess value.

Even if you never activate cellular, you can still call 911 in the US if you have a signal. That's why I got an SE1 cellular even though I never added a plan.

It was $150 on black friday, so no. It's missing features that are on the Apple Watch 7.
I may be overlooking that deal, but I don't see anything under $199 from BF for 2nd gen cellular searching SD, and that was for the 40mm not this 44mm.

Yes and no. Best Buy had open box excellent Apple Watch 10 not that long ago for $220 something. They were gps only and no cellular capability.
sure this SE has cellular but then you're paying extra monthly for an additional line and that's also going to eat away more at the battery
if you need cellular wait for a deal for the 9, 10, or ultra series
Cellular on Apple Watch only activates when the watch is separated from the phone AND known Wi-Fi.

For most users... Cellular only uses battery when you really need it, presuming you don't run in Standalone mode.

(Galaxy and Pixel Watch work similarly, if you have number sharing activated).

Complete standalone with no phone plan? AFAIK, only one, it's called Truphone -- a lot of parents use it for situations where you don't want to associate it with an existing number. Service is a little spotty/delayed but works. $11/mo.

To the best of my knowledge all other plans require existing business with the carrier, and if it's an all-new number you also usually have activation fees on top of it.
I have Truphone for my kid (now called better roaming but these providers also have standalone plans without the need for a more expensive plan

US Mobile has stand alone plans and are the cheapest I could find. It's $78 a year and uses Verizon towers, I think.
Better roaming is $99 a year. Not sure which towers it uses.

Can you get on the watch plan without a phone plan on US mobile? I have tmobile phone plan and don't want to switch, but the watch plan is getting expensive as they removed the $5 plan so I only want a watch plan elsewhere.

I did a quick search and I only found information about the watch plan if you already have phone plan with US mobile, I can't find info about a standalone watch plan, so I'd appreciate if you can point me to that.

I'm not really sure. If setting up for a kid, which I had tried with an older model, I got to the step on my iPhone 16 that has mint mobile and it said I couldn't proceed further. I was planning on using the us mobile plan. I think the base phone you are linking to has to have an apple phone compatible carrier to "push" to the watch.

Thanks for the update! I checked a couple out and they have more "strings attached" than Truphone/Better, but I'm not defending them -- service is rough, but it's easy and cheap. I'm thinking of switching my family (3 phones and a watch) from Mint to Boost right now, and the availability of a watch plan is a big part of that.

Yes, some of the major carriers have "$5/mo watch plans" but they all have to be tied to a much bigger phone plan. I switched from 20 years of Verizon to Mint last year and can't believe I had paid Big Red so much money for so little.
