One thing I like is when there are regulations about what words can be used in marketing. For example, in theory the word "organic" is supposed to mean something and be certified by an independent third-party.
Obviously the word smart doesn't mean anything when talking about pants, so this isn't a great example. I'm just saying I wish there were more regulations about what words companies could use.
An example of where this is meaningful is the phrase "nitrate free". Processed and preserved meats are often treated with nitrates to prevent spoilage. Nitrates also cause stomach cancer. So companies started advertising "nitrate free" products. However what that meant is that they used celery salt which is a naturally occurring source of nitrates. What this meant is that the "nitrate free "products actually had much more nitrates than standard products.
Every time you hear somebody in politics complain about regulations, remember that those regulations protect the food you eat.
Now we need somebody to set some rules about smart pants.
