The price is ok but just FYI there is no way $2599 is the normal price. Rog flow 2025 has the rog tax and a nice screen along with keyboard and everything is only $2799 MSRP for the 128gb model. Realistically I would think the tablet going for $2k and these mini PCs going for a bit higher than $1k is the new normal.

Seems like a miss that they did not include at least 1x 10GBe especially if this is intended to be used for AI workloads.

The price through their website is $1799 and no tax.

Despite the coupon, you also pay tax on the original price so it's definitely not a deal so far from a deal.

This is only $1999 on GMKTec's own website, so you're really only saving $200 on pre-order... https://www.gmktec.com/products/p...a0e48645b9

Personally, this is way too expensive for a non-upgradeable pc... Plus, there isn't any Oculink.

Framework is selling the 128GB mainboard for $1700 and they said this isn't much profit. I don't see Mini PCs selling much less than that and nowhere close to $1k. Things get cheaper at the 32GB ($800) and 64GB ($1300) configurations.

Yeah, the framework has dual usb4 for 40gbit usb4net, but id prefer a 10gbit, and or an x8 to turn into a 100gbit myself.

The profit for vendors heavily depends on AMD. It's probably not very profitable for vendors but absolutely profitable for AMD. The chip itself now costs probably close to $1k, which can get down to $500 or less soon when AMD faces competitions. I'm quite optimistic on this.

This isn't a SFF tax, it's a high VRAM APU meant for machine learning / AI applications. Is it very expensive? Yes. Do most people need it? No. But, the hardware in here is undoubtedly pretty badass. That's a serious chip.

No Oculink is crazy, though.

I'd love your optimism but AMD currently has the market to themselves with these super-APUs so doubtful they will give up profit until competition hits again. Moreover, higher prices with modest improvement seem the norm now that Moore's law feel pretty much dead: newer chips offer only slightly better performance but cost a lot more to manufacture, canceling out a lot of the value of any gains.

Not just Strix Halo, but regular Strix (mainline HX 370 APU) is also marked up and it's been out over half a year. They launched at over $1000 while 2023's 7840hs (ignoring 8840hs generation which added only useless AI) were at less than $700. Even now over six months later I see lowest cost HX 370 system going for $900 while an 7840hs with slightly less CPU/GPU performance is going for close to $400, making for a much better value.

I'd love to see a MAX+ 395 with 64GB get closer to $1k though.
