Without a 2-5 year warranty, no one will want this drive,

Edit ok I see the 2 year warranty. Never heard of this brand. Anyone heard of it?

Also keep in mind, SAS and not SATA (I know title says SAS)

Only SATA will work in a synology I believe.

It has to do with the backplane having a different connector. See the link below for the differences between SATA and SAS.

will your security system work with SAS drives? If it's a consumer-level system, probably not.

It should be a surprise to nobody reading this that these drives are "renewed" (i.e. used). However, it's still a better price than you'll find for used drives of this size on eBay, and the warranty is a plus. The company does list a Manhattan address and phone number, but I can almost guarantee that's not where the drives ship from.

And it's worth pointing out again that these drives are SAS, not SATA. If you don't know what SAS is, then it's unlikely you can use them.

Found an old thread on Reddit [reddit.com]. Seems like a scammy company. I'd pass.

Seems pretty obvious. While Panthers can swim, theres no such family of water dwelling panthers.

These have a 2 year warranty. Water Panther confirmed this, see below, and I mentioned it in the post. I have numerous Water Panther refurbs and most are Exos drives rebranded. Only had one failure so far over a few years and RMA was simple.

I can't speak to the voracity of the comments below stating the company is "scammy" but they are a division of Server Part Deals and I've bought drives from them for years too and had very little issue. RMAs through both entities have always been handled quick and without incident and I've never had DOA drives, although I have had failures within warranty periods.

Nothing in that thread proves anything about the company "being a scam" and is all conjecture. See my replies above. I can't speak broadly but based on my own experience, I've had no issues with Water Panther or ServerPartDeal's drive's or RMA/warranty process.

You can use Synology's comatibility checker to determine if your enclosure supports SAS or not. See: https://www.synology.com/en-us/co...0SAS%20HDD
I sorted by Seagate Exos as that's the most common type of drive these are rebranded from, typically X18s.

Updating the group as I bought a handful of these. While I've bought WPs Expanse and Arsenal lines before with zero issues, the same cannot be said here. Got 3 rebadged Exos drives... 2 of the 3 were in terrible shape with 10s of thousands of LBA read and write errors, both soft and hard, as well as hundreds of thousands of ECC corrections. The 3rd drive appeared brand-new in SMART and performed similarly after a full surface read/write test.

Currently doing an RMA via Amazon renewed and 2 replacement drives are inbound... will report how that works out once it's done.
