hey! which specs 16" did you get from MC? i've been waiting on a good price for the 16" at MC to bite
The same one listed here just in the 16. 48GBs of ram and 1 TB ssd.

I really needed the larger screen for cad work on the go. I didn't want the nano screen because of viewing angles being lost. The larger battery means I can work much longer before charging. And it charges faster. 14 m1 pro I was lucky to get over 2 hrs. With this machine I'm pushing over 6. But that is mostly due to the increase of ram.

The 14 core m4 pro is extremely fast. Odds are I'll hit ram limitations way before that processor slows me down. Looks like I'll be getting almost 800 for my m1. Not bad for a laptop that is over 3 years old. I'm getting almost half of my money back.

Not to keep bragging about this machine. 48GB on a Mac feels about equal to 64 on windows. My windows machine has 32. Same task running side by side with both processors barely touched. My m4 was using 28 and the windows all 32 and getting blogged down. So I found myself being able to switch between 4 different programs at the same time. That was such a relief. My ram usage peeked at 42 which meant I had a good amount left in reserve.

Fwiw - Was able to get ABT to match the price for me. Within 100-200 miles of Microcenter. They did charge me $20 to drop ship it though. Tried bhphoto but they declined the price match.
I am chatting with ABT now. They are saying they can do $2,379 plus $20 shipping. Did you call in? What's your secret? lol

Speaking of the 16" version of the exact same specs otherwise, it's currently $465 off as well, not quite as good as the $500 off the 14" but still a very good discount and only $35 difference in discount amount:

Not necessarily. Personally, I'd choose this config with more RAM - with the advent of local LLMs, the more, the better, basically. The M4 Pro is almost certainly going to be better on overall power consumption/battery life, too. The Max chips push the 14" MBP form factor a little hard in terms of cooling & battery capacity, in my opinion (as an owner of an M1 Max, and a Base M1 Pro before that which did way better on battery life).
I'd take the M4 Pro also. However the M3 Max will be much better for LLM inference, particularly in the case of the 40 gpu core model (double the 20 in the M4 Pro, with 400gbps memory bandwidth against the M4 Pro's 277).

The extra VRAM is good but will run much slower. Still, I guess if you can fit a slightly larger model into memory you have more options, but at a good bit slower speed. Outside of this one thing (local llm), I'd definitely go for the M4 Pro.

Thanks for the reply, funny4life. And you would think M3 Max > M4 Pro, right? But that was my whole point. At least based on CPUBenchmark reported numbers, the M4 Pro appears to do better than the M3 Max. But honestly they're super close. If I had to choose, I'd want to know what TDP they each have, and go with whichever one had lower power consumption.Caleo --> agreed!!! I would totally have chosen this machine last year with 48GB RAM over my M3 Max 36GB (but it didn't exist yet, of course). Going from a 14" M1 Pro w/16GB to a 14" M3 Max w/36GB was amazing. I should have bought my M1 Pro with 32GB of RAM in the first place. Lesson learned. Maybe once my M3 Max is old enough, I'll jump on a deal for an older machine with 64B RAM . Similar to how we've seen deals for 16" M1 Max 64GB / 2TB machines last year, for example. A few generations older, but still BRUTALLY fast and with a sh*tload of RAM and storage for a great price. Who knows. By then, it'll be an M7 or M8... Maybe 4TB storage, and 96GB RAM , for $3K or something.
The difference between Pro and Max is the GPU, not the CPU part. Of course a M4 Pro will score better than a M3 Max in a CPU benchmark.

Yeah BHPhoto is kind of stingy. They also charge return shipping or restocking fees, unlike other major retailers.

LOL nice. Thanks for pointing this out. I think in my original comment I alluded to the fact that I was just making a "basic" comparison.

Looking through some search results, it looks like the M4 Pro beats the M3 Max in CPU (Geekbench Multicore, ~2,250 vs. ~2,100). But the M3 Max beats the M4 Pro in GPU (Geekbench GPU Metal, ~155k vs. ~110k). Pretty massive differences. Fascinating.

It's clearly important to make the distinction between CPU and GPU, especially with these processors. I'll try to keep that in mind for future comparisons. Thanks again, I totally missed that point. I was going to say "nuance", but I think it's a little more than that. More like a fundamental performance parameter.

Battery life is definitely lower on the Max. I just picked up the 16 version of this. Wish it was discounted as much as the 14. I'm loving the freedom the extra ram is giving me.

To me the only reason you'd want to go with the Max is if you needed more than 48GBs. It's a very large price to pay for gaming.
What games are good on a mac these days? Last time I tried it was before the move to Apple Silicon and ports to macintosh were terrible. I used to run bootcamp to game. Borderlands 3 was almost twice as fast on windows than osx on the same hardware. Now I just have both a PC and a Mac.

For me the 14" screen size is too small. I opted to go with the 15" MBA. Great deal though.

I'm not big on Mac gaming but most of the latest games are released with Mac support. Is one if the few pluses of going with the Max over the pro.

But really you can buy a switch 2 or a non pro ps5 with the money saved and have access to a lot more games.

so if i'm interested in doing some gaming on a MBP, should i look for a M3 max deal instead?
