Kind of make sense since fans with wider blades and larger diameters are typically quieter than smaller fans because they can move the same amount of air at a lower speed (RPM). This slower speed results in less noise due to reduced air turbulence and vibrations. Larger fans also distribute airflow more efficiently, requiring less effort to move air.
And this fan has very small blades so much higher RPM to produce the same airflow. Which is why it is very loud. Wonder if there are other portable fans with larger blades which hopefully produce less noise than this.
It really reduce the use case for this if it is too loud to use around people or too loud so you can't concentrate on the things you are doing.....
I don't think it's a good deal though. I bought mine for around $5, and there are plenty of other options.

like most of these turbine fans the higher the louder, but i noticed the whine is more or less noticeable at various rpm, so with the white one (old square style) unit i got for $10, i find setting 2 is a good compromise between air movement and ignorable noise. i like how a long press can "save" your 2 setting, so you don't have to cycle 1-5 to off each time you use it. i will store this in my daily backpack then use this hanging from my neck while on the nyc subway platform waiting for trains as it can get brutally hot underground, so i'm mostly blowing hot air around, but it's better than nothing. also happy to report mine was brand new; i've been getting a lot of obviously opened and often defective returns when i pay for new, so i'm glad it didn't happen with this fan.
btw, in case anyone hates carrying dedicated stuff like this around, while comparison shopping i noticed some of the newer more expensive models double as battery banks to charge your cellphone as the usb-c is two way power, so you may want to look into that if multi purpose would be attractive to you.

- This one has noticeably better airflow than the newer one, but it's also noticeably bigger in size than the newer one. If portability and small form factor is a primary factor for you, the newer one still has great airflow too.
- Subjective, but I think the color and look of the newer one is much better than this one. Newer is true black and looks sleeker.
- Newer one has "fast charging", but don't think it makes a real world difference. Weird thing is, this one has better battery life than the newer one.
- Noise is a wash since they're both loud.
I decided to go with this one due to the better airflow. I like the look and form factor of the newer one, but ultimately, I got this for functionality and the better airflow won out for me as a result. Hope that helps anyone trying to decide!
