I've got the Sta-Green brown mulch in my cart. It says 2 cubic ft. at $2.00 a bag. Scott's 1.5 cubic ft. mulch is also $2.00.

is there a recommendation for one or the other? Scott's vs the Sta Green?

Perhaps someone knows better than I do regarding their differences but when I was at the local store last week, nothing on the bags enticed me to take the 1.5 over the 2. I do remember that Scott's really advertised the longevity of the color while Sta Green just kind of mixed it into the small print. Both seemed to indicate their color should last all year

When I bought both kinds in brown color, I noticed Sta is mixed with mulch chips and finer "hairy" type of mulch chips, whereas Scott's was just like wood chips. Sta color was also darker.
If you prefer a higher quality look, Scott's is better. If you care more for function and bang for buck, Sta is fine.
I also noticed sta had more of fertilizer smell in the beginning which eventually fades. Scott's didn't have much of smell in comparison.

Mulch is mulch and when in ground all look almost the same. Besides these aren't manufactured to exact specifications and every region is slightly different, also every bag.

I always buy the 1.5 cu ft because it's easier to carry it across the yard. I buy about 15 to 20 bags per year and the difference in $10 of the lower quantity product is worth it for the lower stress on my back. I don't want to maximize my returns when it involves the lower back.

The bigger bag is the better deal. I've used both and notice no particular difference.

I read that you should allow the mulch to dry after applying to the yard before you water.

I have a big magnolia tree in the front yard that makes it hard to leaf blow the leaves without blowing all the mulch away. I think I'll have to find a different solution but this is a decent price.

There was an open bag of the black Sta-Green at my Lowes, and it looked awful. I bought 5 bags of the Scotts to mulch where I dig to put flowers. In the middle of June, I will buy 5 yards delivered from my local nursery. I wait till all the crap from the trees fall down.
