"Basmati rice from India, jasmine rice from Thailand and California-grown sushi and Calrose rice (a form of sushi rice) were at or below the 100 parts per billion levels set by the FDA for arsenic in infant rice cereals. However, the Indian basmati and Italian Arborio varieties contained the highest average levels of cadmium."

We bought this bag from Costco on a whim, wanted to try a good Basmati since Gordon Ramsey loves the stuff.
This stuff is INCREDIBLY herbal. Like, overpowers pretty much any dish for us. I found that I've had to heavily rinse the rice in a sieve for a minute or two and it toned it down significantly. We're still working down the last few pounds of the stuff, will probably go back to Jasmine.
But if herbal is your thing, this stuff has some intense flavor.

Wow, never experienced that in this brand, or any other basmati brand I've consumed in past many decades. A good basmati rice should be fluffy, long grained, aromatic and very tasty even though not having a strong taste of its own. This one is certainly NOT a good basmati, far from it. We usually buy great quality basmati rice from local Indian grocery stores, but bought this out of curiosity. It is terrible in texture and taste both (but not herbal, atleast to us!) And it needs to be washed up more thoroughly than the others we buy from Indian grocery stores. A true high quality aged basmati rice is a revelation. This one, is a cheap daily staple for the families who consume it in bulk. But even then, I won't subject anyone to it, and say, splurge a few dollars more for the real thing, and enjoy your meal a lot more.
is this instore eprice at sams or just online?
3 of us finish this in a month.
You mentioned Patel Brothers....you don't find Daawat or Kohinoor better? Some say even Tilda is better. We have been happy with Kohinoor Gold color pack for years now. I put it next to this rice, and just looking at the raw rice tells you how much shorter the grains of this one are, and that these aren't aged at all. When I cook this, rarely it turns out fluffy. But when I make any good quality basmati from the Indian grocery stores, it turns out so fluffy and everyone asks me how I made it or which brand I use. So I doubt if it is me making it wrong, after making rice for decades.

It seems people in India are getting prone to heart disease and cancer after they started eating western junk food..
Also, another option Royal Sona Masoori Organic Rice, 20 lbs.
$15.98 @ Sam's Club
Also Royal is one of the worst basmati brands available in the US. Kirkland basmati is a good compromise between price and quality.

Without making the same assertion blaming a certain geography or diet, what I can say neutrally.and confidently is that there is definitely a MAYO-CALYPSE happening in India, that too, not the real recipe, just a 'vegan' mayo made of hydrogenated cheap oils, thickeners, preservatives on everything. Look at any street food, or any 'fusion cuisine'....ugh everything laced with copious amounts of this white poison....and also fraudulently touted as cheese or liquid cheese or creamy sauce and used in pasta, pizza, sandwich, dosa and everything you can imagine. Let me find that article about thus. It's there on the internet.
