You're right, REI should reduce the quality so that they are disposable after half a season, so that they can sell them to frugaljerk slickdealers

These are fantastic. The quality is really nice, and very comfortable. I've owned these for 2 years and wear them often, and they are still in great condition. They fit really well on me too, not baggy.
I couldn't find any alternatives from other brands that come anywhere close. Columbia has some cheap ones, but without thumb slots and they feel cheaper, and don't fit as well. (More of a fishing look)

The OR Echo is very very thin. It'll snag on the littlest of things. Great in high heat, terrible for durability. The Patagonia Cap Cools have a great material and are my favorite in the crew neck. The material is slick, so the hood struggles to stay in place. This one from REI is my favorite hooded sun shirt. My hobbies and work both have me in the sun so I've bought many sun shirts.

Do you happen to have insights on OR Echo? I am in Texas and the heat is intolerable.
I'd put the Echo just under the Patagonia I mentioned, and it's close enough that it comes down to personal preference. Both are very lightweight and breathable, I just preferred the texture of the Cool Daily.

For heat, I'd say go OR Echo hoodie. I use as my primary swim and hiking shirt in the 100+ heat in AZ. it's 30g lighter than Patagonia so it's lower weight which equals better breathability

there's an adventure Allen YouTube hoodie test against 20+ hoodies - OR Echo beats out Patagonia in most metrics

I didn't wear sun hoodies for years because I didn't like the extra fabric hanging off my neck when the hood was down and simply preferred ventilation/bare skin (I have a sunscreen I really like).

However, all my friends loved them, so I finally gave them a shot last year. During sales of various brands (Columbia/MH, Outdoor Research, UnderArmour, etc.) I got their nicest ones and compared them. After several months and close to a dozen types, this is my favorite for moderate to warm temperatures, and the Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily is my favorite for hot temperatures.

The fit is great, the fabric is very soft (I've had people ask the brand after giving me a hug) and breathable while still being a little warm if you put a layer on top of it when the sun goes down. I bought two more yesterday when I saw this sale went live.
TY for this comment! I am looking to get some sun hoodies for a week long bike ride in the sun and that Patagonia may be the answer!

Glad to help! For what it's worth, I prefer UnderArmour long sleeve compression tops for long bike rides because anything looser flaps in the wind and eventually ends up being annoying and irritating my skin a little. But I know a bunch of mountain bikers and others who ride fine with looser tops, so a sun hoodie might be perfect for you.

I'm a men's size Small, so I decided to try the kids' version in XL instead. It's a bit cheaper and looks like lighter weight fabric as well. If I don't like them, I think I'm going to try the Eddie Bauer one from Costco.com for $15/ea. That one is all polyester instead of polyester/spandex mix.

Great comparison review from GearLabs. Apparently the better breathability of the Patagonia Capilene Cool & OR Echo come at the cost of less sun protection.

How are these compared to the north face ones?

I brought up the published sun protection ratings with friends who play sports and do a lot of hiking/mountaineering, and the responses were basically summarized by one person's comment: "I've never gotten a sunburn through any fabric, regardless of SPF rating."

Obviously, a more dense weave should give more theoretical protection, but I'm a pale fella, and I've worn my Capilene hoodie in direct sunlight with no sunscreen underneath on the sideline for 5+ hours, and I didn't see/feel any indication of sun exposure on my shoulders, neck, or arms.

I'm sure there's a difference in some scenarios (like the fabric stretched over something and staying static the entire time), and I know I'm getting at least a tiny amount of UV exposure, but in real-world usage, it provides more than enough protection for me to use/recommend it.

Look functionally the same. Wonder how tnf's more expensive light range sunriser one stacks up. It's almost half the weight of the one in the comparison. At the thinness I'd worry about it falling apart though.

Ahh whatever, I'll just get the cheaper tnf.
