Non-brushless tools but should be good enough for simple home projects. Brushless is usually a must for people who need to use the tools frequently or for pros.

I never quite get the practical difference though — does brushless last longer? If it can do more, what can it do that this can't? If I want to rip plywood and create some Kreg jig projects, which do I want and why?

You can rip thinner plywood with this 5.5 inch brushed, especially with a good blade, but brushless is more powerful. I use an older version of this one for small stuff, no problem.

Brushless is more powerful and generally provides better battery life. Often times they are also more compact, though that is not true of these circular saws - they're about the same size. One other perk that the brushless saw does have is a strong blade brake. Brings the blade to a brake in about 1 sec.

I built a few things with the brushed 6-1/2" saw and it never let me down, no issues with stalling or anything. I did notice the blade speed slowing down a little on 3/4" plywood though. Faster blade speed often means a cleaner cut with less tearout, so I did recently upgrade to the 6-1/2" brushless model personally.

I prefer the 6-1/2" size over the others. It has faster tip speed and better blade selection than the 5-1/2", but it's easier to handle than the 7-1/4", and most importantly *blade left*.

Typically brushless can handle more power with ease...also brushless has no brushes in the motor...so therefore doesn't get as much wear and tear like a brushed version of the tool...brushless is usually a no brainer .but brushed is ok if you know you will use it more on a lighter basis..and not heavy use for demand in a job field.

I think the difference is efficiency and longevity. I could take the worst saw in the world that's dull and poorly rip a piece of wood… but it's going to take a while results are going to be crappy and the tool/ blade may break/ warp.

In my experience, it's not that great. I wouldn't cut anything thicker than maybe 3/4".

It's sufficient for light projects. I have one at my family's vacation house, it gets used a few times a year. The saw can cut 2x4's well enough, and I've ripped 3/4" plywood with it.
