I usually don't criticize any insight... But coming on a headphone deal to say you prefer speakers is bizarre

If someone wants to waste an hour googling through threads and blog cesspools, by all means. I'll do a quick bot summary followed by a few Google searches to confirm that info and then use my precious time elsewhere. Those afraid of utilizing these new tools are going to fall behind...
You need to understand the tools you're using. If 4.O queries the web it isn't gasping anything conclusive, if it doesn't it is just creating word salad. I use it a lot to learn new things and elaborate, but I see a lot of people don't and treat it as general AI which I'd argue will leave you further behind. That being said you elaborated how you use it better now and that method makes sense, vs your initial post seemed to suggest you let gpt run your life

Why is the same model with closed back cheaper?
Notably sounds worse by those who have heard them. In fact, all the HIFIMAN closed backs are considered bad when compared to all their own open backs and what is considered their house sound.

Been procrastinating as $152 is so hard to pass up, deal is still good so pushed the order button. I really love the planer design and sound. now to pick up another balanced cable.

Having had many headphones over the years, I honestly believe that having open back headphones is just a bizarre waste of time for having headphones at all. Why not just have speakers if you are going to go open back? pfft

Better soundstage for one. Whats more bizarre is wasting time to even post this, normal person just says 'not for me' and clicks to other deal posts pfft

Speakers with large driver have advantage at very low frequency, because you can feel those frequency with body that earphones would never provide. Other than that, earphones can do a better job, because it is simply easier to do for a driver much closer to the ear. Open end is also eaier than close type, because there is no reflection to deal with. Out of all types, electrostatic headphones are the most simple ones, and easily provide better sound, unfortunately they are expensive and require special driver.

I got the Sundara (open box, not refurb) a couple yrs ago. Mids, soundstage, imaging and clarity are great, though I would say I would prefer a touch more bass, and I am by no means a bass-head. Quality has been fine, nothing has broken/failed, though I wouldn't say I've used them heavily. As others have said, you should get a headphone amplifier to get the most out of these headphones.
Interesting, I thought Planar Bass was supposed to be the bass end game...

How do these compare to the HD6xx i love
The HD6xx are just a slightly reworked HD650. It has nice bass, good mids, and rolled off treble. High power solid state or OTL tube amps can make the treble sparkle.

The Sundaras have better bass with a mostly neutral sound signature. They are more detailed, you can hear it specifically when people pluck guitar or string instruments.

Overall they are about the same, I wouldn't bother dwelling in mid-fi if you want a real upgrade, pick up the Audeze LCD-2. They're on sale right now.

Mine were delivered yesterday. The shipping box looked in bad shape and was clearly a reused box. The inside box containing the headphones was not damaged and was sealed closed.

I have these hooked up to a Topping DX3 Pro+ and they sound great. I currently have HD 6XX and HE400se headphones. I haven't compared directly with the HE400 yet so no comment there. In some ways these are only a slight step up but I find them more comfortable than both those headphones. That's in part because of the headband and also through lower clamping force. They are heavier than the HD 6XX but with lower clamping force, I find them more comfortable over time. I do like the HD 6XX ear pads better though. I've set a system-wide equalizer using Oratory's settings, which isn't strictly necessary because they sound great without it. On my Mac I use Soundsource to handle the EQ and other sound settings. Output is set at a 96K sample rate.

They are subtly but noticeably brighter in sound than the HD 6XX and have a wider sound stage. The widened sound stage helps make music more immersive and natural. They also provide somewhat more clarity than the HD 6XX. I've been doing mostly lossless streaming from Apple Music but have also done some trials with local FLAC files. I think my HD 6XX will get a lot less use now, partially for sound quality reasons but also for overall comfort.
Considering this price for refurbished headphones is less than the typical HD 6XX price, this is an easy suggestion over those. Note that an amp is not strictly necessary but they will benefit from one.

On my phone I'm using a JCALLY JM20 Max Portable DAC-Amplifier to drive them and no system-wide EQ (using an iPhone) -- they sound great.

Fast stateside shipping, arrived in 3 days, double boxed. I can not tell these are used they look of perform as new, so excellent job of refurbishing. I like that the pads are higher behind your ears so drivers align well with your ears. I ran all my normal left, right & phasing tests along with some frequency sweeps and am so far quite happy with this purchase, and settling in listening to some of my favorites.

LOL better soundstage my ass. This is the so called "excuse" audio elites like to pull to justify a platform that really has no real useage but to inflate audio elite's EGO to make them feel "special" about their own bloated ideas of how their ear seem super human only to them.

Speakers offer a much better soundstage that earphone can provide. You have more breath of room and space. Speakers also mimic the real world soundstage of live music much better than earphones can EVER produce.

I've regretted the fact of buying any fancy open back earphones whenever I find myself in a social settings where people get irritated when YOU can't keep your own music to yourself in a closed back environment. I've found out that the only ones who actually use open back earphones are obnoxious people who like to FORCE SHARE their music with other, whether other people like it or not. OR they just like to think they have some kind of super human hearing thinking they can hear more than other people.

Yeah that pretty much sums up what people who like open backed earphones are like.
Cool story bro, sorry you're so wrong.

Not perfect, but at this price, hard to beat for the sound you're getting.

I asked chatGPT as well for its thoughts if you could get both for the same cost new vs. refurb. It said both were good, might be more detail with hifiman with certain genres, but it'd come down to your tastes and your preferred sound profiles. However, it did also point out that the reliability of the hifiman's will most likely be less than the Sennheiser not to mention the repairability/modding of the Sennheiser is far more supported.
I have both. Definitely a side grade. Slightly more treble sparkle (more towards neutral, definitely not over bright) but probably more detailed. Going back to 6xx after wearing these is still pleasant. Overall I feel I have no preference for which I use and just grab the nearest ones!

Similar experience to me but I still love the 6xxs too!
