Apple's M1 chip, while generally praised for its performance, has been reported to experience failures, primarily in the form of logic board and rare display issues. These failures, while not widespread, have led to frustrated users seeking repair or replacement, with some facing costly out-of-warranty repairs ($500)
Specific issues reported include:
Logic Board Failures:
.
M1 Macs, particularly MacBook Air and Pro models, have experienced logic board failures, leading to complete shutdowns, boot loops, and inability to turn on. This is often a costly repair, requiring replacement of the logic board and potentially other components.
Display Failures:
Some users have reported display failures, including black screens, flickering, or complete screen failure, requiring costly repairs or replacements.
Kernel Panics:
.
In some cases, M1 Macs have experienced kernel panics, which can be indicative of hardware or software issues, potentially pointing to underlying hardware failures.
SSDs and Data Writes:
.
There have been reports of M1 SSDs experiencing high data writes, potentially leading to premature wear and failure within 4 years, though this remains a topic of debate with varying opinions on the actual extent of the problem. There was a 2021 update to lessen the wear on the SSD in 8GB models

I bought my wife this laptop a few weeks ago. She uses it as a high end Chromebook (only using it for chrome). It has been fantastic for her. We have owned more than 10 Chromebooks and several windows laptops. We use a desktop for real work. This MacBook is fast, amazing battery life, nice charging, reasonably lightweight, good screen, quality build, and good keyboard / track pad. She is very happy.
