I agree that it isn't a netbook killer. It is definitely a great replacement product for Kindle. That is what is drawing me to it. As I said earlier, I travel a lot and carry a Kindle, as well as PSP and obviously my iPhone (both for movies, iPhone for the iPod as well). I could replace the Kindle and PSP with this device and have a lot more "stuff to do"
I don't see this as a suitable replacement for other e-readers. I (and many others) don't like reading off a backlit LCD for extended periods of time. E-ink, on the other hand, looks nearly identical to printed ink and causes no eye strain or fatigue.

Yeah, that's what I said a few pages back. Makes the most sense, especially since iPhone OS already supports ARM processors.

Unlikely. Apple computers tend to have great resale value. Once the i5 or i7 MacBook Pros come out, I'll probably still be able to get 1200+ for my late '08 MBP.
This iPad has iFailure written all over it though. Like AppleTV, almost nobody will use it.
Even Gizmodo wrote a BAD review on it.
Of all people, Gizmodo, who is always in bed with Steve Jobs :http://i.gizmodo.com/5458382/8-th...t-the-ipad

So it's really a big iPod Touch that has 3G and can compete with the kindle and a laptop. Maybe it's just me but I'll continue to play tunes off my cell phone, tote around my much cheaper and vastly more functional laptop and a softback book if I care to read anything...
gotta love sc... glad i got out.

so you'd rather carry around your phone, your bigger, heavier laptop, and a book as opposed to something that weighs a pound and does all of that?

granted, to each his own, but don't make absurd statements.

that's like saying i'd rather carry around my old cell phone, my cd player, and a few cds instead of a cell phone that can play mp3s.

come on, man. i'm all for hating, but at least make it logical. make it about price.

I'm curious on what kind of storage you need. I have a 32GB iPhone and I cannot fill that up, and I have plenty of apps, music, movies, TV shows and podcasts on that.
i have a subset of my music on my work PC; it's pretty much the music i want to have at my fingertips at any given time. it totals 30GB. to give you an idea of file size: most of it is 192kbit MP3, some 128k, some VBR.

people have different listening habits: i have a friend who gets in moods and loads new music on his devices every few weeks with that specific genre; he can deal with having less storage. i load up a bunch of stuff and play it all on shuffle because my music mood changes constantly.

i want to get a Nano for the form factor, but 16GB just won't cut it for my listening style.

Loaded up the video demo from HTML5Demo.com [html5demo.com] just fine on my iPhone. Since the iPad likely uses Mobile Safari, it should work just fine.

Hmm good to know. Still can't watch Hulu on it though Frown

One of the most disappointing things is that it's in 4:3 and not 16:9. WTF Apple? Shouldn't this be a STANDARD for you guys by now?

That's how I am too. I load different playlists periodically. Same as movies and the podcasts are removed as I listen to them. I can't see storing stuff on a device. That's what iTunes and your computer are for.

Perhaps you should consider replacing your music with better quality rips. 192kbps is listenable, 128kbps is awful. VBR should be a minimum of V2, preferably V0. For size purposes, I stick with mostly V2, which on decent portable audio equipment is pretty much indistinguishable from lossless for me. V0, even on higher-end audio equipment, is almost indistinguishable from lossless CD rips.

it's funny how apple makes you feel like they are the good guy when they are only slightly overcharging you.

while i am a bit of a videophile, i am by no means an audiophile when it comes to my music. many of these are rips were done 5-10 ago when 128k was either accepted or the standard, and while it is noticeably inferior, it's not bad enough to outweigh the fact that i would have to re-rip or otherwise acquire and re-tag thousands upon thousands of tracks if i wanted to bring everything up to spec.

Normal users will buy this iFlop just because it's cool and it's apple. Apple makes mistakes that geeks know and which normal users don't. Thats what they bet their products on! Normal users who don't need Flash in their browsers or HDMI for their gadgets. They just want Facebook/Twitter/Email/Youtube and touchscreen.
