I had this saved as a favorite for about a year and it was 25-30$ and I thought that was too much. Even this feels like too much

I have a similarly spec'd enclosure made by GODO. I chose that one due to the number of complaints people had with other brands not having a proper on/off power switch, and instead having a momentary push-button switch that wouldn't allow the unit to turn back on after a power outage.
So far it's working fine and speeds are good (18TB 7200rpm, 250MB/s), but there are some rattles and vibrations I'd like to reduce hopefully with some rubber feet or something. If I can't resolve that, I wouldn't buy it again and instead look for something that had better noise dampening built-in.

How does it handle continuous data transfer? I'd like to get one of these for error-checking those huge refurbished HDDs that sometimes go on sale here.

Can't see a button/box to select a US power adapter

anybody knows how to select that?

I was using mine as a new backup drive and had to transfer 8TB of data to it all in one go. The enclosure did become slightly hot but it being metal helped dissipate the heat, and there weren't any issues with the transfer because of it. For your use case you should be fine, but if you do it more frequently maybe consider a dock instead.
