would you need this if you already have a grinder?

It's a fantastic tool. You find all sorts of uses for it like making quick work of cardboard boxes, easily trimming chicken wire, cutting nails and bolts. Much easier and quicker and lighter when you don't need a full grinder.

Half the size, better cutting angle. Completely different tools imo. So yes if you're using it for it's intended purpose

Definitely easier to work with for smaller cuts, safer too. I only get the angle grinder out for big stuff, the cut off gets used a lot more often for me.

Anyone wondering, I have this Dewalt cut off and also the Milwaukee version. The Dewalt is better, only have the Milwaukee as I use M12 in our motorhome. If I had to pick one, it would be the Dewalt, an easy pick over the Milwaukee

Excellent tool, but mine stopped working a year ago, and I've not gotten around to taking it apart yet to confirm an easily repairable faulty switch connection, which may be a common problem with these.

Bought this several months ago thinking I'd have to look for reasons to use it. Already wore out 2 cutting discs from so much use.

Would this be good for cutting wire mesh in a plaster ceiling?

Contrary to others, bought this and found it not useful for much. A utility knife, snippers, scissors, cutting pliers, etc, were faster, quieter, safer, cleaner. Returned.

Yes, so long as you have enough clearance.
This uses a 3-inch disc with a max cutting depth of just under 1-inch into the material you're cutting, but if there were any obstructions- for instance if the wire mesh was an inch deep into the plaster and you were trying to cut the wire flush with the hole's edges, you'd run into the problem of the tool being obstructed by the plaster before the blade hits the mesh.
That being said, I've used it for such things. You can also replace the metal cutting disc and put a masonry disc to cut into cement.
A regular grinder is more powerful and cuts deeper, but this cut-off grinder style is perfect for quick, convenient, and safer work.

Great price! Most recently used mine a couple days ago to make cuts to the old Dreamcast heatsink and RF shield plates (DCDigital / DCHDMI installation).
