I would not be able to recommend something like this to anyone, as if I recall correctly the OBD2 port draws power through the ecm so any wonky voltage or short might damaged the ecm for the engine and that might be a bit more expensive than a battery. Do you have the solar panel connected to something that is regulating output voltage/amps to the obd2 port?

Just to note- if you prefer to use the cigarette lighter to connect, it will only charge the system if your cigarette lighter stays on after you turn the vehicle off. Also, 10w is the absolute minimum power I'd bank on for maintaining a trickle charge.

I have had this for 4 months or so, and it works great! Before I had frequent dead battery since I don't drive a lot. Now never a problem.

I mounted the solar panel into my sunroof under the glass, and routed the wires through the trim to the OBD port, which allows always on charging in my older car.

I have a 7w version from Harbor freight and what all I can tell you is that those types of things are literally useless.

Yup. Barely 500mA at peak performance is going to do very little (I can't believe they sell a 5 watt model). Most trickle chargers are 1-2 amps and even they can have difficulty with modern cars that don't actually turn off when you turn them off. These really should be marketed as charge maintainers rather than trickle chargers, and even that will be a stretch under anything but perfect conditions. There is no situation where you will put this on a dead battery and come back, even a week later, to be able to start the car.

Highly recommend getting one with a charge controller, which this one does not.
It should not matter too much with lead acid batteries.

So this thing is fine for a lawn tractor that usually doesn't have a problem starting even after sitting all winter but the owner has a slickdeals fueled consumerism problem?

I use it for that and have that malady and so far so good.

I've got four of these on automobiles, a tractor, a semi tractor, and an ATV and they all work great! Easy to move from place to place as well, and keeps batteries fully charged when sitting for a few days or more.

It's interesting that comments range from "this is too weak to do anything" to "this will overcharge your battery and kill it", lol.

I've had no trouble with the 7.5w model as well, easily keeps the battery charged in a Chevy Tahoe when it sits for a few weeks or a month before I drive it.

Sounds like you need a new battery, shouldn't be an issue if it's fully charged.I've started my V8 Tahoe, ATV, tractor, and my car below zero without needed to have a charger connected. Maybe check your alternator as well.

Unlikely. You either have an old battery or a cheap one that lacks the needed CCA (cold cracking amps) save your money and put it towards a better battery

I can't imagine this thing doing anything for you. Depending on the vehicle it can sit and still start. Especially if it's then driven long enough for the alternator to recharge the battery.

I've been running one on my UTV since 2021. It keeps the battery topped up with no issues, even in the dead of winter. It's survived rain, snow, ice and everything else. I connect it directly to the battery with a quick disconnect pigtail as the 12V cig. lighter method does not work in my Ranger.

It's a charger if the battery is not hooked from anything and a maintainer if the battery is hooked up to a car. It's not their fault the car has a parasitic draw more than it's supposed to.Normal draw is between 50-100mA.People need to fix the issue, and this product will do just fine. I have a few of these and they work just fine.

When hunting for parasitic draw problems, the target number I've always been taught is 50mA. So long as you're at or below 50mA, you're fine.
12V x 830mA = 10W
This is a maintainer. I don't see a problem with "only" 10W of output.
