I have one for my toddler. He wasn't using it much until recently. We mainly just used it for lullabies when he went to bed. I recently bought some new tonies for things he's actually interested like Spidey and Mickey and he plays them on repeat now in the car on road trips and just listening to the music while he's playing in his room. Some of the tonies are definitely a cash grab, just some music from a movie with a retelling of the story. But if you can find ones your kid is actually interested in and they like hearing the same stories and music over and over, this seems like a nice price for one to me.

Anyone have one of these things? They've pushed them hard for awhile now and I've wondered how good they are. The concept seems good but paying $15-20 for new content seems REALLY high. How much audio content is that? Doesn't seem worth it. That's on top of the already high buy in to the system. That just seems like a lot of money for just audio kids content.

Never heard of Tonies but my kids have Yoto players and love them. Not sure if they're the same experience but that's my two cents…

From what I've gathered from other moms, Tonies are more geared towards toddlers & the Yoto is better suited for kids preschool age & up.

My 8 year old uses it frequently. It's not a screen, so we appreciate when she just wants some quiet time to herself and she uses this as a form of entertainment. She's learned new songs and progressed into the audio books. To me, it's a "toy" that actually has some benefit and reduces screen time. Adoption will probably vary by child, but we have found it to be better than just the usual regular toys we receive as gifts. Additional figures with more content make great gifts to offset the somewhat high price.

If you like the audiobooks. There are a lot of Audiodramas online via Amazon music (if your subscribed), Audible, city library via digital apps like libby, YouTube, etc. There are so many places to get audio dramas. Free and paid.

Thanks for the suggestions. We do visit the library pretty often but I do often forget about Libby for audiobooks.

That does remind me, while looking for some stories on Spotify, I did find that some of the exact stories from the Disney Tonies were available to listen to on there. So probably a point against the Tonie if you're just interested in the stories.

I know amazon music has The many Adventures of Winnie the pooh by Christopher plumber. That was always a great one when the kids were little. One of their favorites is The Unexplainable disappearance of Mars Patel by Gen Z media, and also their other show Six Minutes. They actually have so many to listen to all for free.

We enjoy using the custom ones. Have family members from other states record themselves singing or telling stories. Then load the songs onto tonies that we modge podged a photo onto. It lets them listen to Grandma tell them bedtime stories. It's pretty pricy for what it is but it's kid proofed.

We have one and the kids love them. The tonies have gotten pretty expensive, getting up to $20 for some, but there is a pretty active aftermarket of parents offloading ones their kids don't end up liking. You can also play them without taking them out of the package, so lots of parents buy them and put them on the box to see if their kids actually like the audio before removing from the packaging. There are also "Creative Tonies", which you can load your own content on. We ask for relatives to read our kids favorite books and record them on voice memos and then we upload them to their tonie to listen to. There is a pretty vibrant community of people who take creative tonie chips out of the figurines and embed them in homemade figurines, and also people who modify the existing figurines to look like other characters.

Just remember this requires WiFi to work. After the Tonies have been downloaded to the box it doesn't need WiFi. But with all IoT if the parent company goes under or decides not to support the current model, you now own a paperweight.

I think Yoto was clearly the refinement of this idea. The make your own cards are 25 for a 10 pack, and you can put a lot of content on them. Like Tonies, you need their servers to get content loaded onto the box, but then you don't need network connectivity.

I sometimes worry that I'm abusing their server offerings with how much I put on each card.
