See the steps below from https://slickdeals.net/f/17077762-at-t-128gb-samsung-galaxy-s22-ultra-5g-w-added-line-or-new-customer-activation-350-35-activation-free-w-free-s-h?p=167181442#post167181442 (you will have to change to s24 from s22 if you want to flash unlocked firmware) but rest is same.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

0. Do the following steps after paying off the phone fully and then waiting for a day or so for the unlock portal to get the paid off status.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

FYI for those ordering with ATT, activation fee on the bill can be waived automatically by clicking on "don't recognize this fee" on the bill on web/app even if it's more than 3 days. It's one time (every 12 months or so) favor from ATT. See wiki of this thread https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 for more details on bills afterwards.

I ordered online yesterday the ATT one to expect receiving it today. Called both the Ontrac and Walmart since there is no update on tracking. Walmart said it's not in stock so they will send once it is back in stock. Online already showed and still showing it's in stock. Now I will not be able to receive it any time soon and will miss the 1-3 days window to playoff and cancel etc. Too much hassle imo. now I am preparing to cancel the order if no update later today 😞. Credit pull loss

Finally i received end of 3rd day. it was memorial day holiday when i ordered hence the delay. Was able to cancel it 4th day. Will likely get bill including the activation fee which will see if can get waived . Thanks OP

Had a chat with At&T a week back and told them the charge of $109 is not correct as I cancelled the line within Buyer remorse policy, the rep told me the charges will automatically fall off by end of the month, is this some crap they are throwing at us or the charges fall off by end of the month as they say? The due date for me is June 26th so wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks
It is crap. Chat with another CS and make them apply the credit to the current bill. I hope you voided the activation fee already by clicking on the link.

You might want to contact ATT and tell them about it. If they fix something try ordering again from Walmart.
I did. But the rep was more interested in selling me the same goddam device through them for $37 a month instead of trying to fix my issue.

Never got an e-mail from AT&T about the bill, but just checked online and this is what it's showing for me:

Activity since last bill
$6.00
Activation Fee (June 03)
$35.00
One-time charge
4GB Phone (June 03 - June 06)
$8.00
Service changed on Jun 03 - partial month charge
Credit - Activation Fee (June 05)
-$35.00
One-time credit
4GB Phone (June 06 - June 06)
-$2.00
Service changed on Jun 06 - partial month credit
Company fees & surcharges
$0.02
Federal Universal Service Charge
$0.02
Read bill & payment info, news & offers
Total
$6.02

Looks like they credited the activation fee automatically. So in total, $432 + $45.36 + $6.02 = $483.38. I paid more than that for an S24 FE for my mom last month, so happy Slickdealer here!

Just want to chime in on my end. Got a verizon s24 ultra. Got the bill about $108. Call twice, first agent said to ignore the bill since the line was canceled. I was afraid of being sent to collection. 2nd agent happily applied the discount and now the balance is zero. Waiting 60 days for the phone to unlock.

Is the bill generated already? If so see the pinned comment to get the activation fee voided instantly and then chat with CS and insist of applying credits to the current bill.

Yeah, the big box retailers like Walmart and bestbuy and their activation process for big carriers is super ancient. It's difficult to know what is going wrong. For example I was an ATT customer 8 years ago but I can't order this from Walmart. I have tried many things but nothing seems to work.

I know how frustrating that can be. Because of that, I missed out on getting S24 Ultra. It seems like I might just end up getting a Verizon one, provided it stays available.

Seeing that AT&T is not going to work for me. Could someone explain the process of getting S24 Ultra from Verizon for the lowest cost if I do not have a Verizon account?

It's basically the same as ATT but you can't do SIM swap to unlock it instantly. You have to wait for 60 days after activation. Also ATT allows you pay it off in app/chat etc right away, for Verizon you have to go to a Verizon to pay it off in cash. Rest of the process is similar; order, activate phome and pay it off as soon as phone arrives and then cancel the account with immediate effect. Also ATT allows instant voiding of activation fee from the bill even after 3 days. For Verizon, you will be on the hook after 3 days from line activation which may be the day you order or when it ships out.

Thanks for the steps. It's just too much hassle if it ends up costing me close to $700 with two months of service and activation fees.

You don't need two months of service with Verizon just have to wait for two months. After 60 days phone unlocks automatically as long as it's connected to wifi. So you will still be cancelling the line with Verizon but you might be on the hook for activation fee but you can chat with CS rep that you got bag signal and you could only test it once the phone arrived etc

Can you go to the store KIOSK Machine and pay off that way (Verizon) or do you need to speak to a sales person to pay off the phone ?
How do you avoid paying the first month charge and just pay off the phone ?

Go to Verizon Corp store and pay with a CSR. To avoid the first month, call or chat with CSR to have it waived.
